use of LLMs is pervasive in academia, everyone is depressed about it. but who can afford ~not~ to rely on AI? those who already hold high social capital: good English, good schools, good networks. For everyone else the 'baseline' is already far out of reach without LLMs

wake up it was all a dream, it's 2006 and you are reading a Murakami novel after school longing for something that will never transpire. It's an unusually hot September day, no one is at home; you never heard of embeddings and latent spaces -- and you never will.

terribly sorry to inform you all that the Songs of our Age no longer school the Youth in such Innocent Pleasures and Moral Virtues as befit a Gentleman, but that they are become the Filthy Waters of such Acts of Promiscuity as would make even a Parisian Libertine reach for his Prayer-Book.
Abstract of a paper "Evolution of moral expression in song lyrics" published in Scientific Reports:

This study examines the evolution of moral expressions in popular music lyrics over six decades. Using the WASABI dataset (1960-2010) and Billboard year-end charting songs (1960-2023), we analyse temporal trends in moral narratives across artist genders and musical genres. Transformer-based language models fine-tuned for moral foundation prediction were applied to quantify ten moral dimensions derived from Moral Foundations Theory. [Highlighted] Our findings reveal an increase in moral vices (e.g., Harm, Cheating, Subversion), and a decline in expressions of moral virtues (e.g., Care, Purity), alongside a rise in negative sentiment, anger, and disgust. [Highlighted] We show that moral dimensions can be inferred by lyrical cues, such as thematic content, sentiment, and emotion, with predictive accuracy improving notably when models are trained on specific music genres. These findings reveal that shifts in lyrical morality co-occur with broader societal changes in values and identity, underscoring how popular music may serve as a cultural barometer for evolving moral norms.

A welcome opportunity to revive this one
Meme-style slide with a light blue gradient background, titled 'STOP CALCULATING INDEX VARIABLES' in large bold black letters at the top.

Below the title, a bulleted list in black text:

NUMBERS WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE MASHED LIKE THAT
YEARS OF RATIO VARIABLES yet NO CONTROL FOR THE DENOMINATOR achieved
Wanted to account for the denominator for a laugh? We had a tool for that: It was called "CONTROL VARIABLE"
"Yes please give me ONE kilogram times years per square meter of something" – Statements dreamed up by the utterly Deranged

Below the bullets, unbulleted text reads: 'LOOK at what researchers have been demanding your Respect for all this time, with all the computers we built for them' followed by a bolded line: '(These are REAL Index Variables, done by REAL researchers)'

The bottom portion shows several mathematical formulas with red question marks scattered beneath them, implying mock outrage/confusion:

A formula for Simpson's Diversity Index: D = 1 − (Σn(n−1) / N(N−1)), followed by red '?????'
A small formula labeled CD = (#○−#□)/(#○+#□+#▲) = 1/6, next to a diagram of shapes (triangle, diamonds, squares, circles) connected by arrows radiating from a central dark diamond, followed by red '??????????????'
The Euclidean distance formula: d(p,q) = √((p₁−q₁)² + (p₂−q₂)² + ... + (pₙ−qₙ)²), followed by a long row of red question marks

At the very bottom, the phrase '"Hello I would like 🔺 apples please"' appears (with a small colorful 3D geometric/fractal icon in place of a number), followed by the closing line in bold black text: 'They have played us for absolute fools.'

Just found an Easter egg on Wikipedia! On the page for double dactyls (a type of poem), there's a sentence that's formatted as a normal line of text, but it's actually a stanza of double dactyl poetry! And... THE PLOT THICKENS! 1/2
Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for “Double dactyl.”The text reads:
The double dactyl is a verse form invented by Anthony Hecht and Paul Pascal in 1951.

An example by John Hollander:
Higgledy piggledy,Benjamin Harrison,Twenty-third presidentWas, and, as such,Served between Clevelands andSave for this trivialIdiosyncrasy,Didn't do much.

Metapoetically, Roger L. Robison crafted this poem describing itself:
Long-short-short, long-short-shortDactyls in dimeter,Verse form with choriambs(Masculine rhyme):One sentence (two stanzas)HexasyllabicallyChallenges poets whoDon't have the time.

There’s then an annotation noting that the text “Metapoetically, Roger L. Robison crafted this poem describing itself:” works as the first stanza of a double dactyl poem.

"When they arrive at Circe’s island in a single ship, the survivors likely number two bands of 22, plus one leader each, including Odysseus: so 46 in total. I have based my estimate of the crew of each ship on this, plus the six for each boat killed by the Cicones, which gives 52. This is in line with the amount of oarsman you would need for a penteconter plus a couple of extra crew, so it works for me but I have also shown the possible range based on 50 to 120 for each ship." ---Nick Evershed
