Are you all really telling me that I stayed off line for a day or so and missed all the glee about a Republican senator making a fool of himself in a hearing? Joy is so fleeting these days

I’m honestly surprised he didn’t say “mutilization” like his cult leader does Also, how do you mutilate gender in a hospital? He’s too prissy to name specific body parts but can’t even say “genitalia”? Soon he’ll be talking about “unmentionables.” We need more mentioning and less fetishizing.

Once the archives become available decades from now, long after I've gone to that great study carrel in the sky, future generations of diplomatic historians will form on the topic of Trump studies, examining how foreign governments analyzed our mad king problem. What is Xi thinking?

Many more headlines thus am breezing past historical scholarship of decades — and Hemings family history — to trumpet a new DNA study that simply confirms what we knew. My bar is low but even I’m depressed by how science always has to be “news” and journalism has so much trouble reporting history.

No, “our worst misfortunes” are not, in fact, “gifts.” That’s just a way to tell people in pain and in need that they don’t deserve help. That they should be thankful, even, for whatever catastrophe has befallen them. Monsters. All of them, monsters.

My quote of the day From Plantiffs v. NIH, Bhattacharya, HHS, Kennedy, and DOGE, filed September 16, 2026
The Challenged Policies violate the First Amendment by imposing viewpoint-based bars or penalties on government funding designed to facilitate private speech. Defendants are discriminating against Plaintiffs and the proposed class by inhibiting their ability to fairly compete for or retain NIH funding based on the fact, or Defendants’ perception, that Plaintiffs’ research-related speech will communicate disfavored views concerning (1) DEI, (2) gender identity, (3) climate change, (4) vaccines, and (5) misinformation.

This is my maternal grandmother, Ida Sledge Engeman. She was an organizer for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union in the 1930s, making good trouble in Tupelo, leading to headlines like “Memphis Society Girl Escorted to Town Line.” I always like to pay tribute to her on Labor Day ❤️
Studio portrait of a white woman in her early twenties, dating from the 1930s. She has dark eyes, strong brows, and dark hair with a wave that is styled across her forehead from a side part and pulled back and up. She is either wearing a dark shirt or a dark photographer’s wrap, just visible on her soldiers. She has no jewelry. She is smiling slightly with her lips closed. It is a senior yearbook photo, and below the picture it says “Ida T. Sledge 1753 Overton Park Ave. Memphis, Tenn.”
