I'm dying laughing at how the cat has conformed to her flower shaped bed today
A white cat is sleeping curled up in a med that has five fluffy white lobes of a flower petal, the cat has half her face peeking upwards and otherwise has filled the pentagonal space in the center of the bed completely

Workers at three major publishing houses-HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Hachette-tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech.At HarperCollins senior leaders purchased Claude licenses from Anthropic months ago "but very quickly realized they didn't know how to implement them," according to a current employee. Dozens of junior-and senior-level staff were then "voluntold" to become
"Al Champions" and were tasked with discovering use cases.Earlier this year, literary agents began suspecting some editors were using Al to write rejection letters. "We compared emails ... and they all had the same classic signs of Al writing," one agent says.
Employees at Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, and Hachette tell WIRED they believe the agents' suspicions were correct."The C-suites at [thel Big Five
[USI publishing companies have more in common with the C-suites at other major American companies than they do with the editors and publicists and translators ...
They're always looking for ways to maximize profit, and right now they're trying to see what they can get away with before there's a revolt."

“What a powerful tool! Is it for anything? You tell us”
In May 2024, staffers say Simon & Schuster held a contest among employees to come up with the best use cases for AI, with a $10,000 prize for the winner and $5,000 each for two runners-up. Since then, the company has "rolled back some of the Al-pushing because employees kept complaining about it in town halls," says one employee.

Wole Talabi, The Fist of Memory
(DAW, October 27)
In this first contact technothriller, a mysterious spaceship carrying an alien hive mind called the Irunmole appears above Nigeria. As the extraterrestrials prepare their arrival, down on the surface several strangers find their fates linked. Itumeleng is a South African astronomer who has put aside his family’s faith and traditions, yet it’s those visions that aid him in identifying the Irunmole in the first place. Meanwhile, conflicted assassin Tope takes another typical job from witchdoctor Baba, only for everything to go sideways and send her on the run—right in the path of Itumeleng, who also recognizes her from his visions. Add in another assassin, obsessed with the singular memory of the title, and you have a thrilling new take on first contact.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."
