Ursula le Guin, on the accusation that fantasy is an escape from reality
[“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.”]

In modern history, what is the least popular that party leaders have ever been to their OWN voters? Second place was the GOP in 2009, where their net approval with Republican voters was only +6. Currently Dems are -8, shattering all previous records.

Our new paper is out! In Brazil, election-driven family conflicts are rare, but affect LGB voters disproportionately. LGB voters’ heightened political engagement and strong opposition to Bolsonaro seem to underpin their greater propensity to face election-driven family conflicts.

These are the vaccination rates of kindergartners by state. It takes 95% coverage of MMR vaccine to prevent measles outbreaks & most states are not achieving it. I fear that under the new administration rates will drop even further and we will start to see preventable illness, disability, and death

I am fine, but I want to declare today was the first (possibly not the last) time I suffered xenophobia in the US. If the government wants to enable the worst of people, fine. I’ll do whatever I can just to finish my PhD and go to a country that still cares about civics and dignity. What a hellhole.

The point is that Milei seems to be a legit politician. While we can debate whether or not the guy is a populist or good or bad or wtv, he seems to be a true believer with a plan. Elon Musk acts as if he was commanded by a foreign autocratic power.

Latin America's response to U.S. policy won't be pretty for the U.S. right wing and poetic for the left wing. I don't think folks get what a bipartisan mess it has been: myopically focused on drugs and migrants, neglect of infrastructure projects and targetted investments, and allowing China in.

DeepSeek is an AI lab funded by a Chinese hedge fund, their AI code is open source, meaning freely available to use, which most big U.S. models (aside from Meta’s) are not. That’s the start…

If someone is using Tether for illegal activities it is because the government was allowing so since forever. It’s super easy to break tether. Of course it’s bad to have plutocrats joining Trump’s government, but picturing tether as something that bad is just wrong. The most vanilla crypto.

I hate to incarnate the crypto bro and I’m pretty sure Tether has lots of problems, but neither of them are being such underworld crypto. Tether is pegged to USD and it’s traceable. If you want to, idk, evade taxes or buy illegal stuff you should use Monero (or at least this was the choice 5y ago)

Notice I believe the Workers’ Party and Lula are more credibly democrats than the right, but they’re still easy to accuse of being non-democrats. It’s like democracy is over thin ice because it’s very easy to let paranoia dominate the public perceptions about both left and right.

Under these circumstances, I guess the only hope for democracy are non-ideological parties that do not want to change much because they’re already extracting maximum rents in democracy. Not exactly an amazing player to count on, so I’m really concerned about the future, with or without Bolsonaro.

No large player in the elections can credibly commit to economic policies leading to sustainable GDP growth nor credibly commit to democracy due to their alliance to radical movements (radical right or socialist). No one can’t trust the other side won’t backslide and rules do not matter for growth.

Social movements are asking the Brazilian government to accept the elections in Venezuela. These movements belong to the leftist coalition which rules Brazil. Together with the economic crisis we have right now in the country, I’m quite afraid for Brazilian democracy.
