shirley jackson you tell em www.newyorker.com/books/page-t...
ar and away the greatest menace to the writer—any writer, beginning or otherwise
—is the reader. The reader is, after all, a kind of silent partner in this whole business of writing, and a work of fiction is surely incomplete if it is never read. The reader is, in fact, the writer's only unrelenting, genuine enemy. He has everything on his side; all he has to do, after all, is shut his eyes, and any work of fiction becomes meaningless. Moreover, a reader has an advantage over a beginning writer in not being a beginning reader; before he takes up a story to read it, he can be presumed to have read everything from Shakespeare to Jack Kerouac. No matter whether he reads a story in manuscript as a great personal favor, or opens a magazine, or—kindest of all—goes into a bookstore and pays good money for a book, he is still an enemy to be defeated with any kind of dirty fighting that comes to the writer's mind.

I also can't speak on how a loss like that changes your brain chemistry. But as long as there's an option for capital punishment, it can create that source of comfort for people with irreparable trauma. That's not a case for it, it's a case against it.

As a society we allow exactly one ventriloquist & one prop comic to be wildly successful per generation. We drop the rest of them through trap doors. The highest height we allow a comedic magician to be is The Amazing Johnathan. We allow you one residency. No one made these rules. But we all adhere.

#portfolioday I'm Ripley, an illustrator & comic artist in NYC who often loves dark themes mixed with delicate & dreamlike imagery. I've done illustration work, including covers, for TTRPGs, horror movies, independent magazines & more 💕 💌skullingway.biz@gmail.com www.skullingway.com
Illustration of an angel statues breaking down and showing strange worm-like growths poking out, something shiny inside. There’s three comic panels on the right showing the infection spreading from the top to the bottom of the image. A delicate silver frame is at the top and bottom, with a pink background. The edges show a worn silver, checkered heart patternImage is an illustration. There’s two white rabbits with purple bows identical to each other. They have strange double eyes, blue liquid splashes on their mouths as if they’ve chewed on something juicy. From their bows, they have blue, strange wire-like entrails with purple stars and sparks. The entrails lead down to a strange glowing machine at the bottom, the center a circular brain with vein-like wires connecting to the rabbits or off the page. At the top, behind them is a strange fleshy object that looks like lungs and a rincage, the base of a computer with lots of blue wires and buttons. It has two fleshy eyes at its sides, one open and one closed. The center of the machine features a window inside, a fleshy presence with bioluminescence pulsating through its veins.

I think most of us are carrying entire chapters of our lives that nobody knows about. Here’s some poems. 💙💙💙 #poetry #blueskypoets #writingcommunity #BlueSkyPoetry #SkyPoet
A poem about recognizing love through quiet actions rather than spoken words, and how care is often expressed in everyday moments.

Things I Heard (You Never Said)

You never said
“I’m proud of you.”

You asked if I’d eaten.
You told me to drive safe.
You waited for the phone to ring.

Love rarely sounded
the way I expected.

It sounded like ordinary concern
wearing work clothes.A poem about looking back on childhood, losing certainty with age, and still appreciating the hope carried by the person you once were.

The Boy I Used to Be

The boy I used to be
thought grown-ups knew everything.

Now I’m older
and I know better.

Sometimes I miss him.

Not because he was right,

but because he believed
tomorrow always arrived
carrying good news.A poem about memory, nostalgia, and how the past often feels warmer and closer than it truly was because memory reshapes what we remember.

The Illusion of Yesterday

Yesterday feels close enough
to wave at.

But every road back
leads somewhere new.

Memory rebuilds old houses
with fresh paint.

It remembers laughter
better than silence.

It leaves the lights on
for people who have long since gone.

Then asks us
to call them home.

A poem about how dreams change with age, shifting from chasing success to finding meaning in simple moments, home, and the people we love.

7 Dreams (A Better Way)

I dreamed of money.
I dreamed of fame.
I dreamed of escape.

I thought happiness
was waiting somewhere else.

Now I dream
of a slower morning,
a full table,
someone glad I came home.

Funny how growing older
teaches you
the better dream. 💙

You don't have to over-explain in your work. You don't have to SHOW everything. Trust the intelligence of your audience, their ability to dream of a world bigger & more mysterious than this. Its, perhaps, enough to KNOW the boys are back in town, without telling where them wild-eye boys had been.
