Somewhat relatedly, I think we're in for at least a few decades of elected officials taking the worst lessons from the Afghanistan withdrawal on 'doing the right thing'

someone born in 1945 was better off than someone born in 1910, if for no other reason than technological and medicinal advancements that improved length and quality of life. but to get from point A to point B you had to live through an epidemic, a devastating depression, and 2 world wars.

Not interested in piling on this reporter, but we see similar catfights between stakeholders in the USAID world Something I feel is missing from all the back and forth on this is anything about the people the work is actually supposed to be for

Talia Jane:

These folks doing rapid response have been very clear: they don't need press showing up. They film everything themselves. Press make those spaces more difficult to navigate - vulnerable people getting documented, volatile agents getting upset because they have more people surrounding them.

These aren't naive conclusions to come to by people simply ignorant to the value in journalism. It's pretty patronizing to think folks doing the work for months don't have a lot of experience dealing with press, need you to tell them how important press coverage is. They know!

Thread continued:

What folks on the ground have explicitly said and made very clear in their actions is they are sick of media only covering the pain and chaos, none of the kinship and resilience. They're asking press to document their humanity. Chasing chaos doesn't do that.

The formative political event for my generation was not actually (only) 9/11. It was Florida 2000. We learned that we, as a country, were perfectly fine with not counting everyone's votes, that the institutions (esp. SCOTUS) were not going to save us, & that one party didn't believe in democracy.

This is basically how we got Milton Friedman, how we got Ronald Reagan, and how we got the up-by-your-own-bootstraps, winner-take-all, profits-over-people economy that's leaving so many Americans (and especially women and moms) still struggling today. Let me explain... 🧵 1/

The University of Chicago just received $100 million from an anonymous donor. Donations of that size fundamentally shift an institution’s programming and priorities, and we know that donors exert influence on campus policy. So this is—as one of my colleagues put it—basically dark money, it should be illegal to stay anonymous when exerting this much influence on an institution that’s publicly supported through tax exemptions, federal grants, non-profit status, etc.
