British people will walk past a Starbucks, Burger King, Costa Coffee, Taco Bell, Blank Street and not even notice. Then they'll see an independent shop called Al-Badr Supermarket and cry about how the UK is being taken over by foreigners.

Being a sentient person in 2026 means arguing in public for issues you never thought you would have to articulate out loud: "Read to your children yourself instead of outsourcing it to a robot!" "Don't televise executions!" Things like that.

It is still GREAT that I don't have to worry about anything that happens or is 'decided' at a Tory party conference. Long may that continue.

Focusing on supporting a theocratic regime that murders thousands of its own citizens, rather than supporting a democratic ally under imperialist invasion does rather speak to the present Green's priorities.

Tomorrow's news today. Tories announce they're going to build 40 hospitals, 5 new prisons, a tunnel to Belfast, a bridge across the Channel, a space elevator, HS3, HS4, HS5 and a zip wire to the moon. The BBC treats these all as credible.

The Greens have already disgraced themselves by letting this motion get this far. If it passes it’s the end of them as a serious party. Which is a shame for, you know, green issues.

I wonder how the Greens of Suffolk and Herefordshire, who voted for more farmers' markets and fewer houses, feel about the Eco-Socialist party which has appeared in this conference? Still think they are two parties bolted together.

A lovely boomer, grim faced with all the problems of the world that he does not have, parked his car in Harborough the other day. On seeing a can behind his wheel, he kicked it into the next empty parking space. I saw two bins.

I went to an an amateur dramatic production in Harborough yesterday. The first few minutes after it started were silent, for dramatic reasons. The lovely middle class audience chatted throughout and didn't stop until somebody on stage spoke.

This is why I never joined the Greens after leaving Labour. Labour is a lot of different traditions melded together over a century, but the Greens are two different parties bolted together. This was the case even before Polanski.

It mught be an early indicator that (perhaps unsurprisingly) it isn't possible for the Greens to hold together a coalition of Cotswolds Tories who don't want a solar farm in their county and tankies from Haringey who want to invade Israel.

The affluent semi-rural have always felt separate and striven to keep it that way. The Piddington thing is just proof that they no longer feel the need to keep it unsaid Just like their trembling racism.

I can see that. In Hist most coursework was a similar experience to most classwork and completed elsewhere. It encouraged cheating and disadvantaged pupils without facilities or expectations at home.

I've got bad news for Julia, who wrote this letter in 1979. 47 years later the WWII nostalgia is still going strong.
A war bore..
WHEN is it going to end, all this nostalgia about the 1939 war! I've had just about enough of it.
Did we reminisce like this in 1959 and 1969 ? I don't recall that we did. So what makes forty years on more significant than twenty or thirty years on? Julia Tant, Herne Hill, London, SE.

If an elected prime minister *had* to be replaced, perhaps replacing him with one who needs to constantly appease a reform/right-wing leaning constituency wasn't a very good idea. He ain't going to ticktock pork scratching the thugs off the street.

Andy Burnham will not say anything today about fascist militia on the street because he is a flip- flopper who is too scared to upset people. He has always been like that, yet people act surprised.
