Another take is that the UK used the prodigious oil & gas reserves in the North Sea to fund large tax cuts & stimulate financial trading & services in London & South East England. Once that was spaffed away the neoliberal response was austerity. Compare that approach with Norway's.

Preparing to give a lecture about planetary boundaries. I say politicians here, but corporate sustainability, media and much of society have very little interest in the other planetary boundaries (noting that their interest in climate often does not translate into actual action).

Perspectives on Politics, the journal of the American Political Science Assoc, staged a "Critical Dialogue" between @hannamorris.bsky.social's Apocalyptic Authoritarianism and my recent book, The Language of Climate Politics. The dialogue was, shall we say, spirited. Link in next post. @cssn.org
There is a material substrate under questions of identity and belonging. People of color are on the front lines of climate change, and they, alongside Indigenous peoples, have
been protesting the fossil-fuel system for nearly two decades. The centrist press others them as "radical warriors" not just to construct "whiteness" or even "the nation," but also to normalize an economic order based on coal, oil, and methane gas and thereby sustain the interests of the business commu- nity that constitutes their readership. This economic order will not be transformed merely by "the elevation of intersec- tional subjectivities" or by offering "radically different reima- ginings of climate change" (p. 152). Without a clearer account of the material causes and effects of the climate crisis, the authoritarian forces arrayed against decarboniza- tion, and the role of media discourse in advancing the interests of the liberal capital faction aligned with those forces, it is hard to see how journalism might ever become the terrain for liberatory coalition-building that Morris envisions.

Lifeboat volunteers save drowning people, check for passports & papers and if they are insufficient chuck them back in? We triage 999 calls to make sure that we only save the 'right' people? Anyone who has been involved in RNLI harassment should jump in the sea. We'd be better off without them. 5/6

That the situation is much worse than any politician will acknowledge and yes, in many ways we probably are f*cked. But things being very bad, many people suffering does not = collapse. How we respond right now to rapidly evolving risks may make or break us. That's our job. 5/6

It's also the case that I do not think that civilisation is going to unavoidably collapse. That's because I don't have access to the crystal ball that some people use to come to such firm conclusions. I say that as someone who has long argued the risks we face are massively underestimated. 4/6

James Dyke @jamesgdyke.info · 16/09/2026
I don't want to be OK about that. I don't want to find peace. Closer to home, I don't want my children to suffer. I don't want young people to not have a future. I could never find peace in that world. Perhaps that means I'm doomed. Happy to pay the price if it means I keep fighting. 3/6
1132
James Dyke @jamesgdyke.info · 16/09/2026
Because if you can afford to do that, you are probably some way down the line of people who would suffer & die as a result of civilisation collapse. Indeed people are already suffering & dying as a result of the climate change we (in the global north) are most responsible for. 2/6

James Dyke @jamesgdyke.info · 16/09/2026
If you have come to the firm conclusion that civilisation is going to unavoidably collapse then maybe you shouldn't be OK about that. Maybe you shouldn't find peace. Maybe you shouldn't spend time & money on seminars & mentoring that offer the promise of finding peace. 1/6
