A6 A small but important practice: making time each week for coffee or lunch with a colleague, ideally outdoors. It takes effort with the pressures we’re all under, but those conversations make a real difference. #LTHEchat

A5 Caring rigour means expecting good work, but also creating the conditions for it; time, support, fair workload, funds. Without that, “rigour” risks becoming unreasonable pressure. #LTHEchat

A4 Celebrating the relational side of L&T means valuing what often gets overlooked; conversations, trust, informal learning. Making space for it, not squeezing it out in favour of metrics. #LTHEchat

A3 I’m wary of “emotional intelligence” as a term. It’s too often claimed rather than demonstrated. For me, it shows up in real decisions: recognising when someone needs support, flexibility, or time away. That’s where it actually matters. #LTHEchat

A2 Leadership that creates positive energy advocates for their teams, pushing for fair workload, time and proper resourcing. Protecting people from being stretched to 1.2FTE all the time. That kind of backing makes a real difference. #LTHEchat

A1 A ‘well’ academic community is one where learning is visible and shared—students and staff in conversation, ideas being tested, informal exchange happening all the time. Saw this at the AA—felt like something many universities are quietly missing. #LTHEchat

#LTHEChat A6 Students may increasingly encounter second-order knowledge: AI summarising human content and then AI commenting on AI summaries. The problem is no longer just algorithmic bias, but algorithmic synthesis. Students need to ask: why its appearing in my feed? and was it created by a human?

#LTHEChat A4 Historically we taught:how peer review works; how publishing incentives shape research; how media framing operates. Algorithms are the new knowledge gatekeepers. Students now encounter information through: recommender systems, search ranking algorithms. If we don;t we are out of date.

#LTHEchat A5 Students search the same question in: Google YouTube Facebook an academic database Example question: “Is biodiversity net gain effective?” (or urban density, or Electric vehicles etc.). Students compare: what appears first who the sources are framing of the issue evidence quality

A3 #LTHEChat I think there is a reduction in listening skills - active listening to someone else's point of view. Its not that you are expected to change your view - but to carefully listen to and respect that someone else takes a different one and that is valid.

Been reflecting on using generative AI in a recent grant proposal ahead of a Vitae workshop. The most useful function was “reviewer 2 mode”. It kept pushing to sharpen the theoretical framing, sometimes in contradictory ways. However, too many caveats weaken a central argument. #HigherEd

One thing I’m carrying from #LTHEchat: climate change exposes the limits of surface realism. Making something “more real” isn’t always more authentic. Sometimes it’s about careful framing, space for emotion, and not pretending we (or our students) can solve everything. Grateful for the conversation.

Thank you everyone for such rich reflections on authenticity, climate and professional learning. It’s clear this isn’t about bolt-ons, but about how we work together over time. Let’s keep the dialogue going. #LTHEchat

A5 #LTHEChat I sometimes wonder whether learning communities emerge when we leave space for interaction and shared meaning-making, rather than tightly specifying every activity. Some of our very tightly written module specs and lesson plans have little room for adjustment.

Dr Alina Congreve @alinacongreve.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
A3 #LTHEChat It feels easier to get staff on board when learning communities grow out of existing teaching practices, rather than being introduced as something additional.

A4 #LTHEChat Inclusion feels less about demographics in the abstract and more about whose ways of participating are treated as legitimate.

A1 #LTHEChat I tend to associate learning communities with learning that feels meaningful beyond assessment — where participation matters, not just completion of an essay or exam.

A6 #LTHEChat Thinking about the unique contributions that people make and AI can't replicate and framing assessment around that.

A5 #LTHEChat I think there are really big differences in how it plays out in the arts and humanities compares to law, or computing or medicine. So university wide policies are not - going back to question one going to help us navigate the disruption.

Dr Alina Congreve @alinacongreve.bsky.social · 21/01/2026
A3 #LTHEChat I think we will get to this very quickly as detection and policing use is not working. That does not mean AI use is unproblematic or should be uncritically embraced - just a reality of getting into an arms race trying to stop students using it.
000
Dr Alina Congreve @alinacongreve.bsky.social · 21/01/2026
A2 #LTHEChat I feel really uncomfortable about the framing with an age of abundance. In very practical terms we will run short of water in southern England if we don't think more about when and how we use AI.

Dr Alina Congreve @alinacongreve.bsky.social · 21/01/2026
A1 #LTHEChat I think it is disrupting some very long-standing approaches to assessments - in particular academic essays as a written form; and software based approaches to checking student authorship - Turnitin.

Dr Alina Congreve @alinacongreve.bsky.social · 12/11/2025
#LTHEChat A3 In a month - to do these exciting new things we need to stop doing some other things to make room for them. And free up our time to do them. We should stop running so many optional modules on niche research interests for very small numbers of students. I would map out what we can stop.

@lthechat.bsky.social #LTHEChatQ1. I think the ability to cope with change and uncertainty. I'm preparing some teaching materials right now for ecologists. All that framework I'm teaching about is being changed under our feet in Parliament right now. They need to be able to cope when it changes.
