Somehow missed that NSFGRFP will no longer consider clinical psychology students (regardless of the focus of the project?). Any recommendations for alternative funding mechanisms for post-bacc and early doctoral students? Want to create a list for our postbaccs and PhD students #AcademicSky

The only socially acceptable position here regarding AI is that it's total crap and will never improve. Completely divorced from reality. But Blueskyers don't want to face reality. I understand that many feel threatened by AI, but denialism and uninformed attacks on experts are counterproductive.

We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.

An important point getting overlooked: When NIH cancels "diversity" grants (e.g., diversity supplements, Fs, Ks, etc), they aren't canceling the grants based on *what* the grant studies. They're cancelling them based on *who* is doing the research. And that disallowed "who" is anyone not white.

I fell through the mental health care gap 30 years ago, so changing this is now a big focus of my work. A massive systemic issue is basic lack of listening & believing people: dehumanising. Meaning is found in our human response to harm and power imbalance, and dialogic relationships reveal this.

My federal grants with @wendymanning.bsky.social and Ann Meier were terminated last week. The language from the termination is below. It has been sad as we are being forced to say goodbye to members of our team. We are figuring out next steps. We remain deeply committed to studying all families.
This award no longer effectuates agency priorities. Research programs based primarily on artificial and non-scientific categories, including amorphous equity objectives, are antithetical to the scientific inquiry, do nothing to expand our knowledge of living systems, provide low returns on investment, and ultimately do not enhance health, lengthen life, or reduce illness. Worse, so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) studies are often used to support unlawful discrimination on the basis of race and other protected characteristics, which harms the health of Americans. Therefore, it is the policy of NIH not to prioritize such research programs.

Not to be a broken record, but AI critics who insist that AI "doesn't work" and is going to just disappear are misleading - that just isn't true, as controlled studies like this one show. There are many issues with AI & many things that need critique, but pretending it is going away is not helpful.
