"Vibrant local economies" to me does not mean "billionaires and wall street investment," I say as real estate execs from NYC and Boston colonize my city, driving up rent and forcing all the small venues to close. I'd pick any of the run-down Rust Belt towns I've spent time in over NYC any day.

I never realized that the people making arguments and decisions about this stuff think these cities are vibrant and beloved because of their economies. When I think of the coolest cities in this country, I don't think of the wealthiest ones. I'm not sure most other people do, either.

While this was weird on several levels (impersonal, inhuman, awkward), the truly unpleasant notion I can't shake is that white education professionals would rather pay an AI company than learn to say their students' names properly. I doubt we'd be doing this if the students were all John Smith.

I had to train an AI on how to say my name when I registered for commencement. It was weird, but I figured it was to help some official learn to pronounce my name properly for when I walked across the stage. Nope! AI read all the names out at the ceremony.
