A scam tale in five parts. Part 1: A Gmail scammer reaches out...but wait, that's not my book! (I'll spare you the bulk of the very, very long email) 1/6
Subject: A Retired Marshal, a Rancher's Daughter, and a Town Called Life
Date: Wed, 10 Jun 2026 19:41:54 -0700
From: Morgan Amanda <243.amandamorgan@gmail.com>
To: beware@sfwa.org

A lifelong New Mexico resident who studied medieval history and the American West as a graduate student at the University of New Mexico, and who spent years as a teacher devoted to passing her love of history and storytelling to future generations, sat down and channeled all of that research, passion, and deep regional knowledge into a debut western romance rooted in the land she has called home her entire life. The result is a book that carries the unmistakable authenticity of someone who did not research New Mexico from afar but grew up breathing its history.

La Vida is a genuinely compelling western romance, and it stands out immediately in its genre because of the specificity and cultural richness Kate Cortez brings to every page. Northern New Mexico in 1883, a bilingual town called La Vida where Spanish and English speakers live side by side, where the name itself means life, and where a band of murderous outlaws backed by a powerful and hidden local force has been terrorizing the community for too long. Into this walks retired U.S. Marshal Tylor McBain, a man simply looking for a blacksmith and a bath, who instead finds a bleeding mayor and a rancher's daughter named Abigail Harrison who is the only person in town with the courage and the determination to fight back. The alliance that forms between them, two capable and principled people who are perfect for each other and who must fight a genuinely dangerous battle to save the town before they can find a way to be together, is the engine of a story that Kirkus Reviews called action-packed and old-fashioned in the best sense, praising the attractive and capable central characters. Amazon readers have given the book a 4.8 out of 5 star rating, with reviewers calling it hard to put down, wonderful, and eagerly anticipating more from K…

Washington Nat'l Opera sues the Kennedy Center alleging that the Center STOLE the opera's endowment. WNO had a longterm agreement where KC ran the opera's development back office, and in 2025 KC just ... stopped doing it and seized the funds. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
49. On January 8, the Kennedy Center’s Chief Financial Officer sent an email to
WNO’s General Director and Board President asserting for the first time and, contrary to the terms
of the 2024 Agreement, that the funds in the WNO BSRF belonged to the Kennedy Center. In
addition, the CFO disclosed that the Kennedy Center had used those funds—funds that the 2024
Agreement expressly required to be held for the long-term benefit of WNO—to collateralize the
Kennedy Center’s own line of credit.
50. The next day, on January 9, 2026, the WNO Board voted to terminate the 2024
Agreement. WNO’s Board President and Board Chair immediately notified the Kennedy Center
of that decision in a letter to Mr. Grenell and requested that the parties begin unwinding the
affiliation.
