Can you imagine what Eric Schmitt did to the staffer who came up with that deliciously idiotic excuse for a gotcha? That person's gonna be looking for work, I imagine.

Money has bought too many politicians, and everyday people don’t have enough money to buy them back. When I’m in the U.S. Senate, I’ll piss off Big Pharma every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

42 new messages since late this afternoon, 41 of them asking for money from candidates and one begging me to come to a mediocre steakhouse. Is the election soon?

Just spent a half hour deleting fundraising requests from Democratic candidates. I'm a lifelong Democrat and I give. But if they think this is an effective way to make me anything but furious, they have another think coming. Is this kind of hectoring successful? Maybe for some, not for me.

Did anyone but me see Pantagleize at the Lyceum? It opened on this day in 1968 and was absolutely spectacular. I went a few times. Ellis Rabb at his best and APA/Phoenix in all its glory.

Is it possible that there is no live, bootleg or other recording of Canned Heat doing Terrraplane Blues with the vocal included? You can hear the track that was laid down before the vocal was recorded, and then I guess Al Wilson died. But they did it live. No one ever captured it? How can this be?

On this night in 1942 I Killed The Count opened at the Cort (now the James Earl Jones) and expired a month later. Notable, if at all, for the appearance of Clarence Derwent, for whom Equity named an award. It's the only time I've seen his name in a cast list, though he appeared in dozens of shows.

What is Trump saying about the Kennedy Center? "I'll huff! And I'll puff! And I'll blow your house down!" Too bad the house is made of brick, or the equivalent thereof.

Rewatched Maltese Falcon and Big Sleep. Big Sleep is superior – better dialogue, pace, and Lauren Bacall rather than Mary Astor, who has no chemistry with Bogart. Peter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet, both great in Falcon, but Big Sleep is more fun, smashingly shot and scored. OK, go ahead and shoot.

As I'm on safari I've gotten several texts asking if I've shot an elephant in my pajamas. This sent me to a rewatch of Animal Crackers, which is not the Marx's best, but not bad. I have not, in fact, shot an elephant in my pajamas, but I did have an unexpected visitor to the patio outside my room.

On my safari ride today we had fun naming the proper groupings of animals - a pride of lions, a stride of giraffes, and so forth. One of our four passengers suggested "a corruption of politicians," which I think should be introduced into to the language immediately. We saw a herd of elephants too.

As a Joseph H. Lewis flower, I had never seen Minstrel Man, which is exactly as problematic as you would think, but 58 minutes into it who should appear in full blackface but that stalwart Broadway star John Raitt, singing his heart out. If his daughter is aware of it I wonder what she must think.

Farewell to the great, and often unheralded Robert Kimball, who discovered so many great lost scores, kept Encores as honest as he could (he didn't win every fight) and knew the top price of every Broadway ticket from the 20s to the 60s. Mainly, he edited many complete lyrics books. A true hero.

I think about gay men during the AIDS crisis, in the face of what often seemed like utter hopelessness, using everything in the arsenal--rage, resolve, defiance, humor, sexual energy, imagination, and art--to prevent despair from ruling the day. Even Larry Kramer didn't simply say, "We're doomed."
