The archbishop who oversees the U.S military's Catholic community has condemned plans to livestream the execution of former Army officer Nidal Hasan and urged any Catholic service members assigned to carry out the sentence to seek exemption. From Stars and Stripes' Phillip Walter Wellman:

Catholic archbishop opposes livestream of Fort Hood shooter’s execution
Broadcasting Nidal Hasan’s execution would undermine human dignity and risk turning his death into a spectacle, Archbishop Timothy Broglio said.

The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person.
The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty

One of Pope Leo's predecessors is the reason Stollen even exists...   In 1491, a papal decree by Pope Innocent VIII permitted Dresdenders to use butter in their pre-Christmas baking, thus transforming a simple fasting pastry into the buttery Christmas delicacy enjoyed today.

Update from the National Trust re. Dunwich Heath, 9.24am, Friday 31 July.
We have been left heartbroken by the total devastation we are now seeing due to the fire at Dunwich Heath, which is one of the UK's most important coastal heathland landscapes.
Although it’s still too early to say what the true impact has been, to both RSPB Minsmere where the fire started and at Dunwich Heath, it’s becoming clear that the fire has torn through the entire National Trust reserve and the landscape that we know and love is now unrecognisable.
We believe that very little heathland vegetation is left and many wildlife species will have been impacted, now and long into the future. Thankfully, the iconic Coastguard Cottages have escaped untouched.

Give people the support they need to live a dignified life, and they won’t feel pressured to access Medical Assistance in Dying. Make sure they’re getting the medical care they need. Ensure they’re housed & fed. If you don’t offer the care needed to live, assisted dying becomes coercive:

Do not, under any circumstances, *ever*, feed someone else's work into an LLM without their explicit permission, if you use the things at all, which you shouldn't. It all becomes training data for the LLM, which means you're helping those things steal their work.
