Basically all European states have financial issues and basically all are discussing (further) restricting social services/support/etc for the wealthier. See UK re childcare above £100 000. I totally get it. However: we need to acknowledge that this is creating a social contract problem.

So, to sum up today's Iron Dome discourse. Badenoch lied about what they had called it. It would cost many times more than £10bn. And is not necessary given that we have got many allied countries between us and likely drone and missile launchers.

Found this from the FT in the summer after reading the Games Workshop versus fish discourse. Still marvel at how much of a success GW is. www.ft.com/content/453b...

GW made £650 million last year. Fishing is over a billion a year. But, the fact you can even compare the two is insane. The statistic of “more than half the revenue of the entire UK fishing industry” is still something worth screaming about. GW, however, is almost certainly more profitable.

Calling it Britannia Shield makes it so much worse. That's what you'd call a travel insurance company focusing on over 50s. Or a long-service award for stewards on the royal yacht. Not a weapons sytem.

The UK does need to rethink its air defences, but given the likely direction of any missiles, an integrated effort with other European countries would make more sense

The £100k tax anomaly is mad and needs fixing, but can we drop the fatuous whiny idea that everyone on six figures is aspirational and everyone on less is loafing about with no ambition to speak of? Thankyew.

Sort of agree with the philosophy, but not the examples. Are shows on their third, fourth channel like Suits and Schitt's Creek in 'bidding wars'? It's the very commercial first-window acquisitions like Gossip Girl that BBC maybe shouldn't be fighting over. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

For those in England & Wales who don’t get them on the NHS: private flu & covid jabs are available from today. I’ve just had both at my local pharmacy. £115 for the pair. Yes, that’s expensive, but if you’re a freelancer & don’t get sick pay it’s probably a lot cheaper than taking time off.

We're repeatedly told that asylum seekers pose a threat to the good people of our country... Reading about the threatening and violent treatment of elderly and open minded locals in Crowborough I get the impression that the real threat comes from closer to home. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
On Facebook and other platforms, people
who are known to support the asylum
seekers have been threatened with acid
attacks, petrol bombs and rape. The dossier.
which has been seen by the Guardian, also
claims that several local businesses have
been threatened by far-right agitators, along
with a church where some asylum seekers
worship. One man was punched in the throat
after he held up a "Love Thy Neighbour"
sign, while an elderly couple were falsely
accused of supporting sex offenders. In yet
another case, a 92-year-old church volunteer
was reportedly woken at 3am for two nights
in a row by a man standing outside her
home, shining a torch through her window
and shouting abuse

Fair enough. O reflection, I guess I'm not an average UK flyer. My only int flights lately have been to same regional airport where officials see my small kids as akin to heads of state, ushering us to the front of what queue there is for non-EU travellers.

Agree but thinking on it, for the average UK traveller would it make much difference? It would make things go a bit quicker at port of entry but train, plane or ferry would still require you to have _an_ ID to get to continent or island of Ireland, wouldn’t they?

Didn't it have Anthony Hopkins as the aristo original Zorro passing on his identity and whatnot? He tells the new guy that being a gentleman isn't to do with breeding but how you behave etc. Which strikes me as a common trope, though only other example I can think of right now is Kingsman.

Burnham's theme in this speech of taking back control, having power over things that felt like they'd got away from us, having basic agency in life instead of feeling helpless is a good eg of what Starmer always lacked - an overarching story making all the disparate policies seem to mean something
