Advice, please! My new book is a battalion history. The history itself, by the time I have added maps and index, is ~400 pages. Part 2 consists of biographies of every officer and will be ~200 pages. So ... produce as one heavy volume or two smaller, easier to handle volumes? Thoughts? #ww1 #book

Black and white photograph, showing a railway passenger station on a curve, with two tracks between two platforms, and small waiting rooms on each. A passenger train faces away from the photographer, with people moving on the wet platform. A gang of track workers is at work on the other line. To the side of the image the river Dee rushes past; in the distance a wooded hillside rises high above the scene. One side of a DL-size leaflet, showing the front and rear covers, and first staff story. The front cover includes the logos of the Llangollen and Corwen Railway, University of Portsmouth, Modern Records Centre and National Railway Museum, with the title 'Staff and work on the Llangollen and Corwen Railway before 1939', and a photograph of Llangollen station c.1900.

Markenfield Hall is one of England's finest and most complete surviving medieval moated manor houses. Built in the early 14th century and surrounded by a rare, fully intact water-filled moat, it has remained remarkably unchanged for over 700 years. The site is recorded
Markenfield Hall is a beautifully preserved medieval moated manor house dating largely from the early 14th century. Built around 1310, it is widely regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of its kind in England. Still privately owned and cherished as a family home, the hall welcomes visitors for guided tours on selected dates, usually during April and October. Surrounded by a complete water-filled moat and entered through an impressive 16th-century Tudor gatehouse, the estate also benefited from extensive restoration work carried out between 1980 and 2008, ensuring its remarkable medieval character has been preserved for future generations. OTD in 1965 The Beatles' second feature film Help! was released. The archive of its screenwriter Charles Wood, here at the Borthwick, includes this wonderfully no-nonsense letter from his agent Margaret Ramsey with some less than enthusiastic feedback on the finished product! (alt text provided)
Letter titled 'Help!' with the words 'You will be amused to hear that we all sat through HELP! at Lerat, where the Moreau film Mademoiselle Genet is being made. As David Watkin had done the photography for you, and was also doing Mademoiselle Genet, Woodfall borrowed print. The production room was a converted cow-shed heavy with the smell of dung, and we sat on rows of benches. Everybody absolutely detested HELP, except Oscar's children. The little French boys were fractious on the way back in the car, and Mercer and Oscar had a frightful row about the merits of HELP! Mercer was frightfully upset about the mindlessness of the whole thing, whereas of course the whole Beatles cult is mindless, and not for the intellectual, so I can't see why a film should be made full of content for an audience who don't want content. Oscar defended the show loyally. I must say the paper-back must be quite awful, if it embodies the text I heard!! However, the time and place were exceedingly inappropriate for this particular film, as they had just been shooting a scene of Moreau in a school room teaching Gilde Rey to little boys while a funeral of a little boy passed the window, killed by the fact that she had set fire to the place where he was burnt. The air was therefore heavy with tragedy. Much love, Margaret Ramsay.'
