Soul of coal, heart of iron; Central Middlesbrough 1892. #MatchMap Something of a tradition with The Godfrey Edition when there are notable sporting links is we discuss the early history of local sporting institutions. Ayresome Park features here, once the storied home of Middlesbrough FC.

Andrew is in London, thinking about what we might today call 'urban renewal' over the last few hundred years. A multifaceted and emotional topic, I think?

We also discuss the Irish catholic diaspora into this area, the history of local pubs and churches, and the linguistic history of the name ‘Washington’. We don’t just do maps; we do history, linguistics, ecclesiastical discussion and the great movements of people – among much else!

Good morning friends! Andrew here. I'm spending a busy few days in London; lots of #MapWalks and generally having a break. I am of course travelling by glorious train from Saltburn! I've planned some wonderful colour maps for you over the next few days, then new maps will land in about a week 👍

Proud priests & mining machinations; Washington 1914. Another example of seemingly quiet places being filled with story, life & links all over the world. This NEW map discusses child chimney murder, mining disasters & a priest brought down to earth by a sharp tongue. Worth £3.75 of anyone’s money!

This is an excellent example of the towns & mines across the NE that changed the world. The maps of this region build into a deeply interesting history of a criminally overlooked region. The world changed the area too; there’s a great story about an Italian ice-cream seller with a very long commute!

Stand by your brother, and we are ever stronger; Wheatley Hill & Thornley 1939. Astonishing stories of bravery in unionising, the chartist movement and winning VCs in WWI can be found in David and Helene Farn’s brilliant introduction on this NEW map. And there’s more to read, of course!

Also included with this map is a detailed and engrossing list of local residents and their trades from around the time this map was first published, and an extract from Kelly’s Directory of West Yorkshire 1889. A wonderful step back in time!

‘Waiteing for the waves… Slaithwaite 1904. Some big stories on this NEW map, one of which relates to our samples. Another discusses the important history of the Radio to this part of #Yorkshire. We also have a smashing egg anecdote, & a look at the long history of this lovely part of the country.

I had a lovely message from a follower today. Thanks to one of our maps and a little further research, she discovered that her grandparents house had actually survived the bombing raids of WW2 rather than destroyed as had previously thought! Isn't that amazing?

This map is part of our excellent coverage of #Cambridge, and our essays across the range highlight the friction between locals & students, workers & tutors, fields & form-rooms, over centuries – while also charting the changes industry and technology wrought upon the landscape and its inhabitants.

Them & Us; Cambridge 1901. #MatchMap ‘Town Vs Gown’ is mentioned in our text, but it’s not the only faultline in the city; there’s the classic Rich Vs Poor, & the scholastic Oxbridge rivalry of course, but also the collegiate competition played out in sports & courts across the city & country.

We include a street directory and a contemporary train timetable; a wonderful view into our forbears’ lives. They also give name to the many workers in the very varied industries the area once saw, from orange and watercress growing to huge gas and sewerage works.

From small seeds an Empire grew; Beddington & Waddon 1911. John W Brown brings us headless pirates, rum smugglers & the most pernicious of all; the homes of prominent bankers! While for a long time the villages were small, their connections to the wider world were not, as you can read in our text.

Our samples discuss the canal but other stories include a tragic murder, the spa whose business was ruined by an abattoir built nearby (something more common than you’d expect!), & others less awful or pungent but just as noteworthily diverting. This is a new map, watch out for more soon!

Go West (Riding), young man; Linthwaite 1905. This map is split by the four historic arteries of trade, industry and travel; River, Road, Canal and Rail. It’s a striking sight, made more so by detail on this sheet - Mill-filled & covered in brilliant names like Crimble, Guy Edge and Slant Gate.

What is striking in both text & map is the immense and immediate power of the railways in the 19th C. Centuries-old institutions were moved, thousands displaced, whole areas of the city flattened and changed forever. In its place one of the greatest cities these isles has produced rose in #Glasgow!

Rails, Hails and Ales; Glasgow (High Street) 1909. This is the sort of map that makes me want to jump on a train, with this map in my pocket, a wistfully hopeful look in my eye and a desire to explore the modern world through the eyes of the past, guided by our fantastically busy introduction!

Alan Godfrey writes a beautiful introduction to this ancient landscape. While we focus our map sample on the Abbey, the sheet is filled with famous points of interest and well worth taking along as a guide as you dip in and out of incense-infused shops, book bazaars and religious ruins.

Myths and marketplaces; Glastonbury 1902. The Glastonbury of 1902 can very easily be seen and felt in the modern day. A small town trading on a past misted between truth and legend, a millennia-long on-and-off struggle between ‘paganism’ and Christianity and a beautiful view from the Tor.

The history of the RN, seen through the eyes (or perhaps docks is a better term) of this port, by Tony Painter is outstanding and worth the price of this map alone, but you ALSO get an amazing map, AND an extract from Kelly’s Directory 1927, PLUS a lovely aside from Alan about his links to the area.

Celebrating 45 years of Alan Godfrey Maps. The 3000th map; Portsea & Portsmouth Dockyard 1931. This map blows others out of the water! A stunning vista of historic naval architecture & a barnstormer of an introduction by Tony Painter. I always recommend reading our sample – this one especially!

Andrew here! I hope you're enjoying our celebratory maps this week as much as I am! Tomorrow's is probably my favourite - it includes a lovely picture of Alan's grandparents. For those that have met Alan in person, I wonder if they'll recognise him in his grandfather, as I do?

Maps are never impersonal items, to the right person at least. Looking across one can evoke every emotion in the right heart; love, loss, hate, hope…perhaps a mixture of many thoughts and feelings. Once again, I say maps are truly magical items!

Celebrating 45 years of Alan Godfrey Maps. The 2000th map; Rossall 1909. Alan writes of a special place in his memory; school. We can all relate to education, and under the surface we share many commonalities & connections to the land, life & history beneath our feet - maps help us see that.

Someone else who comes from a village like this is our founder – Alan! As he says in his additional notes, this map showed his home at the time. There's a special fission of interest when you hold a historic map of a place you're connected to - an immediate connection to those who went before.

Celebrating 45 years of Alan Godfrey Maps. The 1000th map; Holmside & Edmonsley 1896. Lovely names, a struggle between nature & industry, a warm glow reading about village life & the lives of our ancestors… our 1000th publication was a classic example of our wonderful rural maps.

Our first 45th Birthday map is *Leadgate 1916*; heart, home, head office! A classic from our range; the introduction highlights the history not only this area but the UK in microcosm. Mentions of railways & local industry mix with notes on what you see today; with this map you can look through time.

In case you missed this morning's thread; today we're taking a moment to remember those who had a hand in both the Battle of Britain and WW2; flying, fighting, mapping, feeding, building, maintaining... it took a nation to hold up an air force, army and navy.

Battle of Britain Day: the OS at war. Many of our map introductions mention the impact of WW2 in their general histories of the areas we reprint. A selection were produced or planned around the time of the war. Image - some of our maps from this era. (A 4pt thread 🧵)
