Cachexia-induced alterations of miR-27a-3p drive cell-type specific effects in FAPs and tumor cells that coincide with muscle wasting
Narasimhan et al. show that muscle-resident fibroadipogenic progenitors (FAPs) are activated and contribute to muscle wasting in cachexia. They also show that cancer-induced downregulation of miR-27a-3p in FAPs activates an adipogenic program, whereas its upregulation in cancer increases tumor growth, highlighting the complexity of therapeutically targeting such pleiotropic molecules.
