... delivering an astounding range of novel solutions to Maths problems indefinitely but I think it more likely that it will exhaust the set of things that it is exceedingly suited to and prove less effective at moving beyond that.

What is low hanging for these systems to solve is not going to be the same thing as what is low hanging for humans to solve. The power of LLM-based frameworks is their ability to pull from the entire literature and test ridiculous numbers of things against Lean. It may be that this carries on...

Yes, but Lean isn't perfect and it has a growing problem that the ability of people to properly validate everything in it is being increasingly outpaced.

One of the snippets of code below was written by me, the other was written by AI evoked by me. Can you tell which is which? Is one obviously better or clearer than the other?
A snippet of code that reads:

// Draw a stroke onto this canvas in the parameter range [u0, u1)
// Caller is responsible for making sure that both u values are in the correct range and u1 > u0
public void Draw(PaintStroke stroke, float u0, float u1) {
	float uStep = 1.0f / (stroke.PathLength * Size); // pixels?
	PaintStroke.Walker walker = new(stroke);
	var brush = stroke.Brush;
	var colour = stroke.Colour;

	int u0i = Mathf.FloorToInt(u0 / uStep);
	int u1i = Mathf.FloorToInt(u1 / uStep);
	walker.AdvanceTo(u0i * uStep);
	for (int ui = u0i; ui < u1i; ++ui) {
		(var pos, var _, var width) = walker.At(ui * uStep);
		brush.Draw(this, pos * Size, width * Size, colour);
	}
}Another snippet of code, it reads:

// Draws the stroke so far, ending at the cursor (if it's over the view)
public void Draw(Control overlay, Vector2? cursor)
{
	var view = _view.View;
	var drawn = _placed.Select(view.ToScreen).ToList();
	if (cursor is { } at && (drawn.Count == 0 || drawn[^1].DistanceTo(at) >= SamePointPixels))
		drawn.Add(at);

	if (drawn.Count >= 2) {
		var points = StrokeShape.WithEndHandles(drawn.ConvertAll(p => new StrokePoint(p, 0.0f)));
		var line = new List<Vector2>();
		for (int segment = 1; segment <= points.Count - 3; ++segment) {
			for (int i = segment == 1 ? 0 : 1; i <= PreviewSteps; ++i)
				line.Add(StrokeShape.Position(points, segment, i / (float)PreviewSteps));
		}
		var colour = PaintPalette.Colours.GetValueOrDefault(_view.Choice.Colour, EditorView.HandleColour) with { A = 0.6f };
		float width = Mathf.Max(1.0f, _view.BrushScale(_view.Choice.Brush) * view.Side);
		overlay.DrawPolyline([.. line], colour, width, true);
		overlay.DrawPolyline([.. line], EditorView.HandleColour, 1.0f, true);
	}

	foreach (var point in _placed)
		overlay.DrawCircle(view.ToScreen(point), PointRadius, EditorView.HandleColour, true, -1.0f, true);
}

How can TaskManager be telling the CPU is only 28% utilised while it also tells me every core is at 100% utilisation? What does it mean?

There seems to be a venting pipe coming out of the top of it so I suspect it's actually the boiler. There's a little ledge on the wall so I'd just stand on that with my right foot and the floor with the left and straddle the stairwell. Other people might use more sensible approaches...

Unless I'm mistaken about Green party procedures, this wasn't a general vote of the membership but rather a vote of the delegates at conference. In theory those delegates represent the local parties that they come from.

It's a strange time to be a programmer. Programming has always been something that changes fast, but the skills I learnt 40 years ago are still usable today but now? I'm not sure what the career looks like in five years.

As for documentation they're both way better than humans and way worse. Better because they will reliably do it in detail and update it, and worse because it doesn't understand anything so it can't write documentation focused on what you need documented. Plus it's always full of "Claudeisms".

... writing so you never get institutional knowledge of how the code the works being built up by the people who work on it. These AIs are extremely good at figuring out midsize codebases, but I don't know whether they can cope with really big ones, millions of LoC or more.

It makes code. You're keeping the code not the prompt(s). Not very maintainable, I'd say. It's not that the code is bad anymore but that no-one ever knows it. You can get the "AI" to write notes to itself which help some but the AI has no real memory, and it doesn't really understand even when its

At least within the range reachable by simple mutation. You're absolutely correct that eyes have evolved multiple times but, as far as I'm aware, all use the same class of proteins to achieve vision (opsins) which probably were photosensitive in the common ancestor.

Jack Aidley @jackaidley.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Yes, I was thinking of human vision which we inherited from our fishy ancestors. Since all three of our photopsins evolved by gene duplication from the original fish opsin I don't think that classes as independent evolution and it is likely functionally bound to be similar in response curve.

Vision didn't evolve in the atmosphere though, it evolved underwater.

That certainly is the view of some experts but isn't universally held. I'm don't feel able to judge the merits of the arguments. For my part, I'd like everyone to take the strongest view on these things but we're nowhere near there, so not physically mistreating PoWs will do me.

There does not seem to be broad agreement that merely posting a video of PoWs breaks the Geneva Convention rules on treatment of prisoners (which I assume is what you're referring to) unless the video contains elements that are humiliating or degrading. That does not seem to apply here.
