Canada has binding regulations on everything from guns to butter. And none for AI. Are we going to trust people like Elon Musk & Sam Altman to regulate themselves? Or is our government going to stop cheerleading & start regulating in the public interest? It’s literally what government is for.

The United States is taking aim at Canada once again, with a crushing new set of tariffs. Ultimately, government will need to solve this. But in the same way Canadians are avoiding US alcohol, produce, and other goods, they should get off US tech products too. Luckily, I have a guide for that.

I’m in the process of dropping US tech services. Here’s how I did it, and options you should consider.

Days after Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke publicly supported the idea that pensioners and the poor should lose their right to vote — and the wealthy should have extra votes — Elon Musk called him a "national treasure." But that's not all. Lutke also has the ear of Canada's prime minister. Here's proof:

Very cool that Shopify’s CEO thinks the poor should have far less of a vote than the rich. Still worth that ad read money, folks?
Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke says “good system.” In response to the following proposal:

“Interesting... what about weighted voting proportional to the level of income tax you pay? (no income tax paid - O vote, $1-100k - 1 vote, $100-200k 2 votes and so on... cap it at 5 votes for $500k+. For those that constantly complain about the wealthy not paying tax/fair share they'd have nothing to worry about right? Why not reward representation of taxation and build a democracy around those that foot the bill?”

For many years, people didn’t randomly film others in public—not because we didn’t have the technology, but because the social contract said you didn’t do that. That’s why Meta is going full court press on their PR and celebrity endorsements. They remember how people ran google glass outta town.

Uncontrolled AI is a threat to our jobs, our environment, and our communities. Canadians across the political divide know this, and that’s why they’re fighting back. The public must assert its role in the technologies shaping our lives, and draw hard lines where AI causes nothing but harm.

Jason Kenney hopefully amplifying reports that Carney might be open to privatizing our healthcare. If this ends up having even a lick of truth — which there is no reason to believe right now — it would be horrifying for our country. Don’t even think about it, Carney. Please.
Jason Kenney tweets “encouraging if true” in response to a post from second street.org, which is a group I’m not familiar with but is apparently a free market ideology think tank lol. More on their post in the next pic and alt textSecondStreet.org, which is apparently a free market think tank, posts on Twitter alongside a photo of carney: “Prime Minister Carney is taking a different approach to provincial health care reform.
Rather than discouraging innovation, his government appears open to Alberta testing policies already used in many high-performing universal health care systems around the world - including the policy of letting patients choose between using the public system or paying for private treatment.
When millions of Canadians struggle to access care, new ideas deserve a fair hearing.
Read the open letter and learn more:”

Before “enshittification” became a rallying cry, By Cory Doctorow (GPG 0xBF3D9110957E5F4C) was a kid who watched the internet grow from a bedroom modem into something that kept sprawling. He once believed tech could liberate everyone. Now, he’s its sharpest critic. ow.ly/Up5E50Z5osJ

Happy 100th bday to Sir David Attenborough! He was 93 when I met him. What struck me most was his curiosity. He was always asking q’s: about the depth of sequoia roots, the rain patterns, the endemic animals. Big, branchy brain; small ego. Wanna live to 100? Stay curious!

We have two dominant visions for digital tech: one from major corporations that maximizes profit at any cost, and another based on cyberlibertarian ideals that assumes you must code to participate in society. We need another: where the public sector builds and funds tech for the broad public good.
