Old Woman who lives in a Shoe. Cheese. Books. Music. Politics. Children’s Services. Cocktails. Random ❤️❤️❤️ Do I think “Big Thoughts” about the issues of the day? Yes, I do. Do I share them here? Mostly not. Why not? What purpose would it serve?

Life in the shoe: End of the weekend. After dinner coffee and Pichuncho. ☕🍸🧚🏼‍♂️
A diminutive coffee cup holding a caffè crema, and a rocks glass containing a dark amber Pichuncho cocktail poured over a single ice sphere and an orange zest twist.
Both drinks are on coasters (the coffee on a star shaped wooden coaster, the Pichuncho on a round cork one) on a wooden tabletop.

Liar. Small boat crossings peaked under Johnson in 2022 reaching 46,000 in 2022. In current year they are 18,565 and falling. Also prior to Boris Johnson's Brexit there were none.

A slim bright turquoise paperback lies on a wooden table.
The cover illustration is a set of markings like paint strokes. Two white vertical marks, slightly curving like parentheses, surrounding two smaller black marks, and with a broad pink slash across them all, like a tally mark.
The title of the book is "On Earth As It Is Beneath", the author is Ana Paula Maia and the book has been translated by Padma Viswanathan.
There are various bits of other blurb and insignia on the cover.

This is a legitimate criticism of an article that doesn’t clearly highlight it’s a Reform administration making this decision. But it’s very likely the predecessor Labour administration would have had to do the same. It’s a rare local authority that can afford to deliver non-statutory services.

Life in the shoe: This is a Webster Cocktail to start my weekend. 🍸🧚🏼‍♂️ And the book is On Earth As It Is Beneath, by Ana Paula Maia, translated by Padma Viswanathan. 📚
A cluttered tabletop holds the makings of a Webster Cocktail (apricot brandy, dry Vermouth, London Dry Gin, sugar syrup, saline, limes, a squeezer, a shaker a jigger and a peeler). There's also a slim book with a brilliant turquoise cover. And in the middle of the jumble the Webster Cocktail itself, pale yellow in a coupe glass with a lime twist.

Buried in the detail of ‘The Disappearers’ this reflection on mobs: “To call them a mob is to let them off the hook. Those were grown men fully intent on doing what they did, each in their own way.” Worth holding onto that truth and the accountability that should come with it in these times.

Life in the shoe: Cocktail time! A Walnut Manhattan. (It's walnut season, after all!) Very hard to balance the walnut piece on the edge of the glass. 🍸🧚🏼‍♂️
Bottles of sweet Vermouth, bourbon, nocino and angostura bitters in a row behind a frosted coupe glass containing a Walnut Manhattan cocktail which is a burnt sienna colour. To the extreme right you can catch a glimpse of a jar of cocktail cherries, and if you look really hard there's a cherry in the coupe.
Half a walnut balances on the rim of the glass.
