I saw a live birthed harbor seal pup for the first time in my life today. I thought it would be horrifying because I have a weak stomach, but it turned to UNGODLY CUTE very fast! Using this thread for some moments in the minutes after. All shot on my z8, edited on phone for now. 🦭 🦑

When you register your name in the Icelandic phonebook you can choose to state your profession. And they have a pretty loose definition of what exactly a profession entails. This person for example has opted for „þjóðhetja“. It means „National Hero“.

This is possibly the pettiest rant in the world, but I am UTTERLY TRANSFIXED by the hideousness of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir concert outfits in the NYT article today and I need to yell about it. Qualifications: I sew and have sung in a lot of choirs. Look at this. What?? is happening? here??
The women’s section of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir performs, wearing expressions of strained religious ecstasy. They’re wearing multi-layered white outfits that I will attempt to describe but will not be able to do justice. They sort of resemble stereotypical choir robes at the shoulders and chest, with boat necklines and wide sleeves, except they appear to be made of jersey and are abruptly cropped just below the bust with an extremely narrow, puckered hem. The effect is as if someone found a row of robes on hangers and hurriedly and maliciously took shears to the bottom two thirds, like a prank by mean high school girls. The underlayer is tunic-length and tight across the stomach and hips, pulled down over a straight long skirt in what seems to be the same material. The sleeves and underlayer hem are trimmed with the messiest, wrinkliest inch and a half of shiny white satin you’ve ever seen in your life. Sewing machines were definitely harmed in the making of this photo. The sleeves are bracelet length-ish, showing Apple watches and varying amounts of arm. Each ensemble is finished with a pearl necklace, which pools unevenly in the folds and creases in the outer robe.

I fundamentally agree with Jules here, but this piece absolutely throws non-binary people to the wolves by identifying our identities as products of this transgender liberalism, rather than recognizing that our identities have been weaponized against us.

Found Admiral Piett's Reddit account. In response to a request for ways to avoid crying in stressful situations:
Screenshot of a Reddit comment.

"I pretend I’m Darth Vader. It sounds silly but take it for a test run next time you watch an emotional movie. Throw in a little of his breathing if you need to, it’s really effective for me.

That was already weird enough, but on the weirder side I’ve also heard that if you focus on clenching your sphincter muscles, it makes your brain forget about crying. I’ve never remembered it in time to try it though, Darth Vader clenches my sphincter enough already."

WorldCon panels dropped and I guess they've decided to jump on the right wing's train of strawmen about the gay agenda? Please, if anyone in their life has encountered a bookstore giving them half a dozen sapphic recs with 'strong women leads' let me know so I can shop there
Panel Description from WorldCon 2025
Strong Woman Lead =/= LGBTQIA=
Tagged Culture/DEI
Room 420-422 9-10am
Have you ever walked into a bookshop and asked for books with strong women leads? Perhaps you've requested that love not be a major plot point? Has the staff excitedly passed you half a dozen books that, though good, have a bit of a repeating theme? Here we ask the question: Why do authors/bookshops assume the only way to have a strong woman lead is to make them gay with a woman love interest and prevent men characters from rising over the background? Isn't it possibly to have a book with strong women and men characters in it and not have them fall in love?

Accessibility is a right. Please add alt-text when sharing images, so that blind and low-vision people aren't excluded from the conversation. Some context and copy/paste or a brief description are often enough. Checking the "reminder to add alt-text" box in your accessibility settings helps a lot.

January @thestorygraph.com wrap-up. I love the cheery colors and the calendar format, this app is the best. This is the first time I’ve ever logged my reading for a month: One small step toward my life goal of becoming @nwhyte.bsky.social. :P
Brightly-colored Storygraph wrap-up graphic for user hanne_. It shows that in January, I read 22 books, with 9,373 pages and an average rating of 3.36. My highest-rated reads were Wolf Hall, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and The Patron Saint of Liars. Average book length was 357 pages, and average time to finish was 1 day. The bottom of the image is a graph of pages read each day, marking each with a dot and connecting them with a snaky green line. January reading calendar from the Storygraph app for user hanne_. It shows the month of January, with book covers placed on the days they were finished. When a book was read over multiple days, a line corresponding to the book’s cover color is drawn through them. The bottom corner of each day lists the number of pages read.

Eight (!!) years ago right now, I was at my local Alamo Drafthouse, waiting for #TheExpanse Season 2 premiere – my very first fannish gathering! – to start. I was unbelievably excited, but unbearably conspicuous with my rush job Ceres dockworker outfit and fistful of “Remember the Cant” leaflets.
A menu for the Expanse Season 2 premiere’s food specials is held up in front of a movie screen. There’s a scratchy OPA split circle tattoo on the arm holding it, and a Remember the Cant flyer featuring James Holden’s face on the table.

It's January 23, & you want to know, don't you? You want to know which historical figure bought eels on this date. Of course you do. It was Cardinal Wolsey! In 1525, his kitchen account books show an expenditure of 16d. for "eels to roast." There you are. Now go enjoy your day! 🗃️🧪
Meme. Painting of Cardinal Wolsey by Sampson Strong from the late 15th C. The cardinal is dressed in his carinal-colored carinal clothes, and his pointy hat. He is looking to your left, and there's no indication that he even knows you're here. His neck and chin look fat; he is very jowly, like he's trying out for the part of the bulldog in the Christmas pageant. Wolsey is pointing with two fingers. He might be blessing someone, or he might be indicating that he wants two eels. It's impossible to tell from the way I've clipped the image.

Not for nothing, but "Sampson Strong" is a wonderful name, and I like to think that it's a descriptive title. Adjectival Nominalism. He's not just strong, friends. He's Sampson Strong.

The meme text reads:
"'Roast me some eels'
The original cardinal direction"

Fun #TheExpanse fact of the day: At least one person “coughs out a laugh” (or very similar phrasing) in every book. Nemesis Games has the most in total, with 6 laugh-coughs (cough-laughs?) out of 22 total coughs. Leviathan Falls has the most by proportion: Only two coughs and one’s a laugh.
