I am this way! Why have I been lying on a completely empty bed for an hour with my legs curled up like I’m trying to fit in a shoebox while staying ready to RUN at any moment? No clue, but I hate it right here with you!

I saw a live birthed harbor seal pup for the first time in my life today. I thought it would be horrifying because I have a weak stomach, but it turned to UNGODLY CUTE very fast! Using this thread for some moments in the minutes after. All shot on my z8, edited on phone for now. 🦭 🦑

> holy cats, human! This might be my favorite exclamation I’ve ever received. 🥹 Thank you. I WAS tempted to torch the entire project and/or apartment. But I’m kind of amazed my little immersion circulator actually managed to heat it enough even over that time.

I should update you! It took seven hours in a giant camping cooler, stirring and tearing my hair out, to go from cream-colored to this precise greyish thing, but I DID IT AND I AM NEVER DOING IT AGAIN.
Looking into an enormous rectangular tub of water with an immersion circulator clamped to the side and greyish fabric floating in it . An arm, wearing a long and awkward industrial safety glove, is reaching the frame to give a thumbs-up. A person dressed as Dedra Meero, from Andor, wearing their pale grey tunic and looking thoughtful and dour while holding a datapad.

When you register your name in the Icelandic phonebook you can choose to state your profession. And they have a pretty loose definition of what exactly a profession entails. This person for example has opted for „þjóðhetja“. It means „National Hero“.

Okay, I feel better having let that out. Back to my own sewing project, which absolutely might come out hideous, but at least will be made out of somewhat logical materials and not make me feel like I’m being forced to cosplay as the grocery bag of grocery bags under my parents’ kitchen sink.

Horrific thought: Are they… making these women make their own concert outfits at home? Surely not, but now that I’ve said it, I can’t get away from the idea. Would explain the wildly varying hems, and why none of these stretchy-looking dresses seems to have met a serger.

but then why literally underline all the chests? Whyyyyy?

But at least they all have perfectly matching pearl necklaces (that look like cheap party favors against the white, and are the perfect length to sit weirdly and highlight creases).

Iro @itreachesout.bsky.social · 25/07/2025
But back to the snark, WHY MAKE THE GIANT SLEEVES SO SHORT?! Now everyone’s mix of Apple watches and hair elastics is just highlighted against the white, they have to worry about what their hands are doing, and the varying sleeve length is yet another way to miss cohesiveness by a mile. Whyyyyyyyy.

Oh NO. I didn’t think these could possibly get worse, but the design from the side is just plain mean. There’s no attempt to look uniform on the diversity of body types, and the mess of tents/awnings/tarps REALLY draws the eye… oddly. Now I just feel bad, wearing this would make me feel terrible.
The performers from the first image, seen from the side. The cropped top portions of the outfits are all hanging at different heights and angles on different body types.

Wearing flimsy white lace-trimmed camisoles pulled way down over the hips under every single shirt was very much What The Cool Modest Girls of Utah did in the 2000s, so I can’t say they’re failing at brand recognition here. But THOSE HEMS. And the (almost?) matching skirts! Most cursed layer cakes.
A group of people in their aforementioned dresses get cheerfully out of a golf cart on the Temple Square grounds. The full outfit is visible, with white skirts reaching almost to the ground and closed-toed black shoes sticking out.

What is happening here?? The longer I look, the more confused I get. Which hems are sadder? The thin uneven ones around the crop tops, or the giant puckered satin-trimmed abominations around the sleeves and under…things? Why do they have both?

From the shoulders up, they look like the offspring of a cathedral cotta and a jersey-knit dress. Ugly, but not criminally unhinged. But then — THE CROP TOP! At first glance, it looks like they’ve got an understitched facing on their necklines… and all put their dresses on inside-out.

This is possibly the pettiest rant in the world, but I am UTTERLY TRANSFIXED by the hideousness of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir concert outfits in the NYT article today and I need to yell about it. Qualifications: I sew and have sung in a lot of choirs. Look at this. What?? is happening? here??
The women’s section of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir performs, wearing expressions of strained religious ecstasy. They’re wearing multi-layered white outfits that I will attempt to describe but will not be able to do justice. They sort of resemble stereotypical choir robes at the shoulders and chest, with boat necklines and wide sleeves, except they appear to be made of jersey and are abruptly cropped just below the bust with an extremely narrow, puckered hem. The effect is as if someone found a row of robes on hangers and hurriedly and maliciously took shears to the bottom two thirds, like a prank by mean high school girls. The underlayer is tunic-length and tight across the stomach and hips, pulled down over a straight long skirt in what seems to be the same material. The sleeves and underlayer hem are trimmed with the messiest, wrinkliest inch and a half of shiny white satin you’ve ever seen in your life. Sewing machines were definitely harmed in the making of this photo. The sleeves are bracelet length-ish, showing Apple watches and varying amounts of arm. Each ensemble is finished with a pearl necklace, which pools unevenly in the folds and creases in the outer robe.

Oh, absolutely. It’s *entirely* a movie about the school education had by those men and their ilk, not about the historical Roman Empire. I’m not qualified to opine on making jokes when posting about research (or using them in paper titles), but I figured I’d add the context just in case. :)

I’m glad to have helped! I nearly scrolled past, but couldn’t stop thinking how *severely* troubling that sentence would be (both in meaning and in construction) absent its context as a well-worn joke.

I’m so sorry, I truly can’t tell whether you and @sarahmay1.bsky.social are doing a bit with absolute bone-dry delivery, or sincerely concerned about the wording. Just on the off chance it’s the latter, the post is riffing on a quote from Monty Python’s Life of Brian, intended to be ridiculous.

I fundamentally agree with Jules here, but this piece absolutely throws non-binary people to the wolves by identifying our identities as products of this transgender liberalism, rather than recognizing that our identities have been weaponized against us.

Found Admiral Piett's Reddit account. In response to a request for ways to avoid crying in stressful situations:
Screenshot of a Reddit comment.

"I pretend I’m Darth Vader. It sounds silly but take it for a test run next time you watch an emotional movie. Throw in a little of his breathing if you need to, it’s really effective for me.

That was already weird enough, but on the weirder side I’ve also heard that if you focus on clenching your sphincter muscles, it makes your brain forget about crying. I’ve never remembered it in time to try it though, Darth Vader clenches my sphincter enough already."
