This is one of the best commentaries about film criticism I've seen in a while. Too much of film criticism has become a reductive search for messages rather than an exploration of the cinematography, acting, and art of film, and its place in the history of movies.

You'll note that this gray and neutral trend is far from modern, and began in earnest around 2012, filling up Pinterest and car lots and decor shops. It's lasted unusually long, far longer than pink and tears of late 80s or harvest gold and avocado green of the 70s. It's chromophobia

This all feels like the only way to make do with a system that is entirely broken. It’s inevitable, but also a sign of the times that “don’t cheat because it’s wrong” is almost comically irrelevant

I'm somewhat indifferent to Christopher Nolan's films and this @economist.com article I think puts my feelings into words. His plots are clever, but I rarely emotionally connect with the characters. www.economist.com/culture/2026...

We just watched #Supergirl… why does Hollywood keep making adaptations that ignore the source material? The “Woman of Tomorrow” comic is a great story about trauma and revenge. The film completely misses the point of it.

The waits between seasons doubled in last 10 yrs — & this piece doesn’t get into it, but when execs also demand shorter seasons, in some cases way too short, the end result = audiences that just don’t engage with shows/characters the same way. www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/w...

This seems very tentative but i will nonetheless seize the moment to reiterate my view that a fundamental reason Jackson LOTR works and almost no other Tolkien adaptations do is that it has actual Tolkien dialogue/prose to work with and is extraordinarily creative about finding ways to use it

"Bigger isn’t necessarily better,” Hudson said. “If I’m excited about a game and then I find out that it’s 200 hours long — even if I have no ambition to actually finish it — I wonder, if I put 20 hours in, will I even be out of act one? A lot of players just want to play something and finish it.”

weird I've always felt the opposite. Star Wars novels felt like important continuations of the epic adventures from the movies, albeit a bit more serious in tone. Trek novels were far less focused on moral or social questions than the TV shows and far more focused on fan service.
