Programmable enzymes for targeted gene insertion
Nature Reviews Genetics, Published online: 07 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s41576-026-01002-9The programmable insertion of large DNA sequences could overcome fundamental limitations of current genome-editing technologies. In this Review, Lampe, King and Sternberg describe recent advances in recombinases, retrotransposons and CRISPR-associated transposases, and discuss how these systems are enabling mutation-agnostic genome modification.

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

Mapping cell-type- and age-dependent neuronal vulnerability through genome-wide in vivo CRISPRi screens in the mouse brain
Lin et al. developed an in vivo CRISPRi screening platform to map gene function directly in the mouse brain. Their genome-wide survey across neuronal types and ages reveals cell-type-specific and age-dependent vulnerabilities that are invisible to cell-based models, offering a functional view of the brain beyond gene expression atlases.

Scientific truth arises from persuading the scientific community. The right’s donor class seeks to hack that process by artificially elevating fringe ideas that have NOT persuaded others, for which consensus has not formed in a free and fair marketplace of ideas.

Requiring an accepted paper can put a student’s graduation timeline in the hands of review cycles they cannot control. A submission-ready manuscript or preprint seems much fairer when the committee has already judged the work itself.

Not Drug Monkey, but here are my objections: A university should not make the granting of a degree dependent on the actions of outside third parties. You can require a submission-ready manuscript, but you can't require acceptance because that's entirely outside of the control of the student/faculty.

Tau-induced mitochondrial reverse electron transport drives neurodegeneration
Mitochondrial dysfunction features prominently in tauopathies. The mechanistic link between tau and mitochondria remains uncertain. Li et al. show that tau enters mitochondria and interacts with complex I subunit NDUFS3 to promote reverse electron transport (RET) in Drosophila, mouse, and human iPSC models of tauopathies. Inhibition of RET offers neuroprotection.

Metabolic atlas of early human cortex reveals glycolytic remodeling and pentose phosphate pathway control of cell fate transitions
The developing human cortex is composed of diverse cell types, but how nutrient metabolism shapes their fate has remained unclear. This study maps the metabolic landscape of the developing human cortex and identifies glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathway activity as key regulators of radial glia fate, controlling the generation of outer radial glia and inhibitory neurons.
