The historian Jon Wilson is on the @ippr.org Progressive Review substack today, talking about the apparent crisis of the nation state, bad history, and fragmented politics: progressivereview.substack.com/p/bad-histor...

Bad history and the impossible nation state
A world of nation states is much newer, and much more contingent, than we often think. The nation state still matters, but it has to be reinvented.

I'm also concerned about UK borrowing costs and fiscal credibility, and it absolutely should be a cornerstone of the upcoming Budget. But this framing I'm seeing feels a tad unfair to me.

There are no easy wins here, only hard choices. I think the public, and particularly the next generation, deserve a government willing to make decisions that, while unpopular, are actually capable of transforming outcomes. That means tax rises.

The Chancellor is constrained, but he's not powerless. There’s still plenty of room for big reform. In the upcoming Budget he should fix property taxes and capital gains tax to make them fair, boost growth, and give the government revenue. 📺 @harryqp.bsky.social on @news.sky.com 👇

With public frustration and anger at the cost of living running deep across the country, the stakes could hardly be higher. But if the government gets this right, it could mark the beginning of a more productive, more resilient and more broadly shared period of growth.

However, it will take more than a conference speech to rewire the British economy. The Chancellor will need to take on vested interests, devolve significant powers away from Whitehall, and make difficult choices on tax, investment and public ownership.

Institute for Public Policy Research @ippr.org · 28/09/2026
For too long the gov has been an observer of the economy when it should have been an active participant. The vision the Chancellor set out today will see the government actively shaping the economy, creating jobs in the industries it wants, in the places it wants, benefitting the people it wants.

Making people poorer doesn’t make it easier to get a job. This new policy from the Conservatives won’t achieve its objectives, is likely to be unworkable, and could simply push up spending in other areas as a result.

Cutting benefits doesn’t get people into work. If you want to reduce the benefits bill, you need to focus relentlessly on the barriers to work.

Trump’s handling of the war in Iran remains deeply unpopular with voters and they desperately need a foreign policy win. This Greenland agreement gives Trump an opportunity to present a major foreign policy win, but is it really as historic as they claim? @sofiepultz.bsky.social on LBC.

Trump has announced what he calls a ‘historic’ deal over Greenland, but how much of it is actually new? Many of its key elements simply build on arrangements the US has already had for decades. With the US midterms just over six weeks away, Republicans are struggling in the polls.

There is no reason why people who earn their income by going to work every day should pay more tax than those who make their income from profits on shares, crypto or property. The government should be looking to shift taxes from work to wealth at the upcoming Budget. 2/2

There is currently no general limit on how much a permissible donor can give to a UK political party. This risks undermining public confidence that political influence cannot be bought. There should be an annual £100,000 cap on individual political donations.
101
Institute for Public Policy Research @ippr.org · 20/09/2026
Between 2001 and 2018, parties received an average of £3.9m a year from individuals giving more than £1m annually. Between 2019 and 2025, that figure rose to £13.1m a year, almost three-and-a-half times as much.

Institute for Public Policy Research @ippr.org · 20/09/2026
£179m has been given by individuals donating more than £1m to a political party within a single year since 2019. That's 72% of all £1m-plus individual donations made since 2001, despite the period since 2019 accounting for less than a third of the years covered by the data.

The two £36m donations to Reform announced this month are not an isolated phenomenon, but the most dramatic example yet of a longer-term shift towards British parties relying on very large individual donors. 🧵
