The way devolution policy has been communicated in recent years has been jumbled, inaccessible, and hasn’t connected with the broader public Devolution needs buy-in, and that requires making it mean something to people's everyday lives, writes @ipprnorth.bsky.social's @maeveschaffer.bsky.social

The word devolution needs to actually mean something to people
Devolution needs public buy-in. Public buy-in needs effective storytelling.

💼🔟Moving some of No10's operations up to Manchester? Sounds brilliant - but it has to go with further devolution to see a truly empowered North 💪 @maeveschaffer.bsky.social talking to BBC North West Today, also featuring Northern Powerhouse Partnership's @henrimurison.bsky.social!

I worked in journalism during the Southport riots, and remaining impartial and silent throughout that time was incredibly difficult. Being able to speak out against this hatred and violence within a progressive organisation feels liberating. Watch the response here

Can hosting big sporting tournaments like the Open bring benefits for the North? They can, but only if communities and regions are considered from the beginning. Here's @maeveschaffer.bsky.social for BBC North West 👇

📈 Child poverty risk has risen among families where all adults work full time, tripling for couple families since 2000. Work should be a route out of poverty. That means better childcare support, flexible jobs and progression for parents. Read more 🔗 www.ippr.org/articles/work-isnt-working

🏨A visitor levy could be a game‑changer for the North, as it has been across Europe. 🪙A small charge on overnight stays, led by mayors, could help fund better transport, support culture + green spaces, and boost our towns and cities that welcome millions each year. Here’s why it matters 👇

🏠 How do we fix the housing crisis? 🔧 🏗️Government says it’ll build 1.5m homes this parliament. But IPPR North research shows housing challenges differ across regions. We need a place‑led approach, not just more supply. @indiafhg.bsky.social explains why👇

So true. Also, many of the Americans doing literally nothing about Epstein’s American ‘associates’ are precisely the ones lying about Europe & particularly the UK being overrun with child-rapists. It’s insane.

Is it time to stop framing “U-turns” as a bad thing? If a government listens to the people and changes their mind on policy that had proven to be unpopular, surely that is democracy working how it should? Maybe we need to rebrand the U turn. www.thetimes.com/article/0044...

Does anyone else feel incredibly pessimistic about the future of the planet? End of rules based order, end of NATO, climate change, rise of fascism and on and on… My goodness it is so disheartening to be a progressive watching everything you fear come into fruition.

I think Kemi might need to go and speak to some young girls and ask them who they’re more worried about. Is it the bogeyman the media love to blame? Or is it the boys they pass in school every day telling them to “go back to the kitchen”, who idolise Tate and use AI to alter their images. Grim.

Dog-whistle and factually incorrect. Ladies, raise your hand if you were sexually assaulted by a boy at school? I’d wager this or a family member is most women’s first experience of sexual violence

If the President of the United States can call a woman “piggy” with no recourse or consequences, the fight for the rights of all women to be heard and treated as equals has become a joke. Great op-ed
