I don’t understand why people just jump to the conclusion that voters are the root of electoral outcomes but don’t consider that the people who control the most sophisticated ‘info’ output & surveillance networks on the globe have figured out how to reliably subvert the democratic process by now

I could write a long thread on why and how Zionism was by many seen as an emancipatory movement in the early 20th century (and the contradictions involved) or on (marginalised) versions of Zionism that pursued Jewish national expression from an egalitarian position. But this seems esoteric to me.

The proscription was wrong. The subsequent arrests are wrong. The Government needs to change course on this, it's not justice.

It’s impossible to read this about the police still wasting huge resources attempting to convict people for peacefully walking slowly and then begin to comprehend the craven police inaction over Tommo and his violent masked thugs. Can anyone explain it?

"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."

Seems Carra is following a general trend of pundit negativity, summed up by the noise Neville makes all the time like he's tasted tea with gone-off milk. Probably made worse by the desire to be over-critical of his former club to evade accusations of bias.

I love The West Wing as a drama, how it rounds smaller characters and alludes to complexity within polarised debates. But today's policy and power problems are much too serious for a West Wing approach, and it's time for non-right-wing politicians to stand up for what they actually believe.
000
Loopin' @introverse.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Bartlet never had to confront anything like today's right wing. He never encountered a true villain who was polite, well-dressed and well-educated but wanted evil things. He never had to risk the power of his office to stand up for values that were truly under threat.

Loopin' @introverse.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
A generation of politicians grew up with a core belief that those with extreme policy positions could always be made to find reasonable compromise by the mystical benevolent overseer (them!). They didn't account for the capacity of humans for evil whilst being polite, well-educated and well dressed.
100
Loopin' @introverse.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Though he's represented as aggressively ethical, Bartlet rarely makes a true ethical judgement about policy. And - beyond fanfaring godlike the power of his office - power dynamics behind policy are rarely interrogated. Instead, we get 'warring (but human) factions united by Bartlet.'
100
Loopin' @introverse.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
So when Bartlet becomes involved in conflict (usually as a solution broker), the story is about him and his skill, and the humanity of his opponents, which gives us a much better, well-rounded drama. But it often underplays the policy differences and the power dynamics around them.

On West Wing, if you want to tell a policy story, it must be through the eyes of the people involved. Power dynamics are the off-screen, unstated mechanism by which characters have been pre-selected - they are rarely acknowledged in the show itself.

West Wing had a balance to strike: do you put your emphasis on the people, the policies or the power? The right choice was obvious: as a story teller you need your audience to invest in your characters. You need emphasise people. But that means you may skate over the policies and power dynamics.
101
Loopin' @introverse.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
In drama you have to simplify real-life situations and events - you generally haven't got the bandwidth to represent all the complexities of human experience! When it comes to politics there are three major dynamics: the policies, the people and the power.
100
Loopin' @introverse.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
One of the great flaws of using The West Wing as some kind of exemplar for the good old days of sensible politics comes from something that differentiates a good drama from a bad one: minor protagonists written and acted as well-rounded, whole people.

I would love to ask a prominent BBC journalist to give me an example of an illegitimate concern. Is seems to me that it has become a question not of fact, logic, or ethics but of volume. If a big enough proportion of a village was anxious about Bigfoot or Chemtrails, BBC would cover it in a way...
