Sweet, strange uncitizens: ONCE I WAS MADE OF EARTH is here, an epic fantasy that's been ratling in my brain for years now and that I'm putting out into the world serially outside of the capitalist publishing apparatus. Share, and read, and comment. archiveofourown.org/works/91618061
The painting "The Moment" by James Warden, with the text "Once I Was Made of Earth" on it by Rivers Solomon. The painting is in the romantic style, quite dramatic and dark in tone if not colour, with a horse rearing with fear in its eyes as a snake launches to bite it, against a back drop of pink and blue mountains.

Panel 1, two rudimentary stick figures. The first says, "My doctor says I need to see a neologist." The second replies, "Don't you mean neurologist?"
Panel 2, a single stick figure in a sketchily drawn lab coat that Shrub Dryad thought was funny, who announces, "This case requires aggressive trortment."

Here's a poem my friend wrote about masculinizing hormones.
Andar Wärje
New Home

Testosterone has made me softer than
I was before. Those days of holding in--
stopped breath, stuck voice, choked bone-stick, brittle-thin,
my reach an ever-tightening wingspan,
ribs locked, a dim self-hating prison, and
a Bluebeard's cave of murdered selves within.
Those nights, my racing heart like rats would spin
inside my hollow chest walls--how it ran!
Yet quiet now, its frantic claws gone still
as shafts of sunlight beat into its cage.
My breast unfurls like crocus buds part chill
soil after finger; soft, thick fur like sage-
brush pelts down hills to wide wet lakes that fill
with snow-melt. Old ice flows to a new age.

This is entirely true on so many levels I don't think I could possibly detail it exhaustively, but you really can't oppose trans people's human rights and still have freedom of expression and bodily autonomy, the idea that people are entitled to self determination goes right out the window....

The torment nexus meme is misleading in that it suggests that our technoligarchs are capable of actually building anything. All that happens is that they use old sfnal concepts as a shared language—that old sensawunda, now bottled—for marketing their quite ordinary torment products

I’m not attending Worldcon this year & everything seems to be a mess but this is so mind-bendingly bad on so many levels that I think it’s worth unpacking while I’m in the no-space of airports
Screenshot of Worldcon 2025 panel description reads as follows:

Strong Woman Lead # LGBTQIA+
Culture/DEl
Room 420-422, 9-10 a.m.
Have you ever walked into a bookshop and asked for books with strong women leads?
Perhaps you've requested that love not be a major plot point? Has the staff excitedly passed you half a dozen books that, though good, have a bit of a repeating theme? Here we ask the question: Why do authors/bookshops assume the only way to have a strong woman lead is to make them gay with a woman love interest and prevent men characters from rising over the background? Isn't it possible to have a book with strong women and men characters in it and not have them fall in love?

This is a fantastic thread and I’d like to note something about it, going back to my earlier thread— Courtney is vividly describing a type of care system. One I’d define more specifically as a CARE HIERARCHY. Part of caring is tolerating discomfort so others can feel better. 🧵

This is something I think about a lot because it's instructive about the nature of different kinds of conflict. A conflict of ideas can theoretically be won with argumentation. A conflict of power and will cannot. Progressives often mistake the second for the first.

Here are the opening paragraphs of my just-announced novel, WHAT WE ARE SEEKING. "On the Free Ship _Edgar’s Folly_, traveling away from Essius at ninety-nine one hundredths of the speed of light, it was the last day of summer...."
On the Free Ship Edgar’s Folly, traveling away from Essius at ninety-nine one hundredths of the speed of light, it was the last day of summer.

Tomorrow the ship’s engines would begin to sing, and everything that floated now would fall. The aft walls would become floors. Corridors would be converted back to elevator shafts, and where now the ship-folk glided freely back and forward through the air, they would be carried down and up in closed chambers. The informality of summer would give way to rank and hierarchy, bright clothes would be exchanged for uniforms; and on the old bridge, after the harvest feast, the summer captain would be laid to rest beneath the stars.
Winter was coming early, and it would be a hard one: brief days at the gravity of lost Earth, long nights at twice as much. A message had come in, that was what everyone said; the ship would slow down just enough to send rescue. It was, they said, unprecedented. But if the sudden change of seasons had unsettled them, they were too busy to let it show. In one day the life of the ship, that had expanded into three dimensions in the summer, had to be compressed back into two. The toolbox fastened by a thin strip of elastic to a wall, the winter cookware webbed into a forward corner, the fish tank held by magnets to what soon would be a ceiling, each had to find a place where winter’s gravity would let it rest. And, from all the hidden spaces of the ship where they were kept, the parts of beds were being brought out: beams of metal and planks of wood, and what the ship called mattresses—which did not mean cloth made fat with moss or windweed silk, but great deflated bladders to be filled with water as a cushion against gravity. The comfort of beds was an intense preoccupation with them, for those who stayed awake in summer felt the winter in their bones.John Maraintha, who had been summoned to attend the captain and did not know why, kept to the edges and moved slowly. He had thought the ship’s ventral corridor, being widest, would be his easiest way to the old bridge, but now he realized his mistake: this was tomorrow’s cargo elevator, and everything unwieldy had to come through here. Up and down the shaft as far as he could see, ship-folk guiding or towing their burdens launched themselves on long diagonals, missing each other by instinct and the imperceptible communication of the space-born. They could all see each other’s next move in the set of a hand on a guide track, the tension in a leg or shoulder. John, not fluent in that language, could only try to make his path predictable. He clutched his bag tight, wondering if he should have left it behind. Nothing could make it practical in summer—it would not hang from his shoulder properly, and he had to bind it to him with a piece of borrowed netting, making a cumbersome mass above his hip. But he might need the medicines contained in it, and he liked to keep it with him, the only thing he had from home that mattered. The bag’s body was only waxed canvas, but the strap was a length of his great-uncle’s soul.
