From America, Oct 1945: Zerex Anti-Freeze ad from DuPont (+Zerone Anti-Freeze) «WHICH FACE WILL YOU WEAR THIS WINTER?»
This advertisement emphasizes the importance of using anti-freeze to prevent engine damage during winter. It contrasts the 'sad face' of car owners who neglect anti-freeze with the 'bright face' of those who use DuPont products. It promotes Zerone and Zerex as reliable solutions for rust, corrosion, and freezing, with a cartoon duck character promoting anti-freeze.

WHICH FACE WILL YOU WEAR THIS WINTER?

This sad face is reserved for the car-owner who forgets to get anti-freeze for his car in time. Old Man Winter will come along and split the engine block, cylinder head or radiator wide open. And when you try to replace engine parts these days, your face gets longer and longer. Yes-a freeze-up could be the death of your car this winter.
This bright face is for the car-owner who will have a Du Pont anti-freeze put into his radiator in plenty of time. He'll not only prevent a "freeze-up" but stop rust and corrosion as well. An extra happy smile comes from knowing his anti-freeze is going to stay put, which it will do if he asks his service man to check over his car's cooling system for leaks.
Since engine parts don't grow on trees, Protect yours now with anti-freeze!
$1.40 a GAL. War Emergency "Zerone"* gives thorough protection against rust and corrosion as well as freezing. Until regular "Zerone" comes back (this season's production went to war), there's no better buy at the price.
$2.65 a GAL. A limited supply of "Zerex,"* Du Pont's non-evaporating anti-freeze, is now available. "Zerex" won't boil out. One filling lasts all winter. Gives complete protection against rust and corrosion-won't form sludge.

Preserved in the collections of the Guimet Museum (Musée national des arts asiatiques–Guimet) and frequently attributed to the pioneering Italian-British photographer Felice Beato, this circa 1867 portrait stands as an iconic document of early Japanese photography (Yokohama-shashin).
Positioned in profile with his back turned to the camera, a Japanese groom (bettō) leans thoughtfully against a rustic wooden railing, leaning into the oval vignette of a hand-colored albumen print from the late Bakumatsu era. His upper body is almost entirely covered by a full-back tattoo (horimono), extending across his shoulders and down his arms like a second skin. The intricate ink-work depicts a classical figure—possibly a warrior or deity—framed by swirling background clouds (kumo) and waves (nami) in subtle indigo and gray washes applied by hand. He wears a patterned cloth headband (hachimaki) tied snugly above his brow, securing a sculpted traditional topknot (chonmage). The delicate hand-coloring adds faint ivory skin tones and soft pigment to the fabric, awakening a quiet sensory landscape: the cool, smooth touch of polished paper beneath a magnifying lens, the faint, lingering scent of albumen, pine resin, and ink, the prickle of needle-engraved skin, and the silent, suspended calm of an early photographic studio in Yokohama.
During the late Edo period, full-body tattoos were deeply tied to urban working-class culture (edokko), particularly among grooms (bettō), palanquin bearers (kago-kaki), firemen (hikeshi), and couriers (hikyaku). These men routinely worked stripped to the waist, wearing their elaborate horimono as a badge of physical endurance, working-class pride, and protective amuletic armor. The tattoo arts (irezumi) evolved in direct dialogue with woodblock printmakers (ukiyo-e), particularly inspired by Utagawa Kuniyoshi's heroic illustrations of the Suikoden (Water Margin) warriors.

Oct 10, 1911: California voters passed the amendment giving women the right to vote (nine years before #19thAmendment). www.sos.ca.gov/elections/ce... Suffragists celebrating in Los Angeles, via the Los Angeles Herald (Oct 1911): cdnc.ucr.edu?a=d&d=LAH191... #suffrage #womenshistory
A screen capture of the Los Angeles Herald (October 13, 1911) shows the front page above the fold. The central b/w photo is a group of cheering suffragists at Choral Hall (in the now-gone Philharmonic Auditorium) just after the Herald staffer brought news that “suffrage had surely won.” Initial reports on the evening of October 10th didn’t look good for the suffrage amendment in California. Suffrage lost in San Francisco and barely won in Los Angeles. Suffragists began to brace themselves as they prepared for a new campaign. It was the votes from California’s rural and inland counties that tipped the scales. According to one of the headlines, “Majorities Rolled up By Inland Counties.”
