On this day in 1940, Harry Jerome was born in Prince Albert, SK. As a sprinter, he won bronze at the 1964 summer Olympics and set seven world records in his career. He also co-created Canada's Ministry of Sport. He is a member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. 📸 Sask Sports HoF

Intranet Findability: Why Employees Can’t Find Information
Better search won't fix an intranet nobody can find anything on. Here's why findability fails in complex organisations, and how to diagnose it with research, card sorting and tree testing.

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

This is real but in Cambodia it was $500 when I was there. Your extravagantly ket-addled tourist paid for the cow whether they hit it or not (and this was Cold War-era explosives, no practice shots, you are not hitting the cow). Nice little earner when the minimum wage was about $200/month.

29 June 2017 was the first #OneTeamGov unconference. Were you there? How did you feel? Wanna do it again? #OneTeamGovAt10 #OTGAT10
An event schedule board for an unconference event, laid out on a large white poster grid with colorful sticky notes detailing different sessions.
The vertical axis on the left lists venue room names, each paired with a historical portrait photo and maximum capacity:
 * Fry (40)
 * Pankhurst (40)
 * Butler (35)
 * Hill (25)
 * Stopes (20)
 * Wilberforce (20)
The horizontal axis across the top features bright pink section headers showing time slots:
 * 11:00 – 11:45
 * 12:00 – 12:45
 * Lunch (spelled out vertically down a central green stripe)
 * 13:30 – 14:15
 * 14:30 – 15:15
 * 15:30 – 16:15
Each cell in the grid contains handwritten yellow, green, or orange sticky notes detailing speaker names and pitch topics, such as "Gov Depts: Evolution or Revolution?", "Digital & Policy", "BREXIT", and "Policy as Code".

The ‘we’ is always fascinating here. There seems to be a self-comforting belief that William Wilberforce woke up one morning and said ‘Guys, slavery is bad, m’kay?’ and everyone just went ‘oh wow, you’re right’ rather than, you know, decades of campaigning, vitriol and fierce pushback.

Ooo this is cool (for a very obscure definition of the word cool, but still) - a little time capsule, not only in audiobooks being described as "exclusively for the blind", and (sweetly) Mann saying this was the highest honour the book received, but in the fact that it took *forty-four* discs!

My grandpa was a Chief Petty Officer on HMS Devonshire in WW2. He then became a bank manager and volunteer treasurer for his local Royal Naval Association. Liked cricket. Smoked a pipe. I think he would have refused to confirm anything about this characterisation of the RN, whilst smiling broadly.

Been trying to find a way of saying what's special about this album, and this is pretty good. It's about meetings and thresholds and the gift of learning across cultures. Also it slaps, in about 6 different genres. It's not naive but it is beautifully open-handed and sincere. Give it a go.

Don’t mind the idea of emergency alerts. Do mind if they’re badly written. If you’re going to say there’s an emergency say it clearly, unambiguously. (Did it cross the “it’s an emergency” threshold for another thread, bound to be a few out there already. Maybe. BlueSky seems dead these days.)

Lived in Bangladesh for 3 years, and Cambodia for 7. This is completely true. Don't care about looking good - you'll look a complete fool - but nothing compares to the joy of placing risk ahead of self-consciousness and being greeted with generosity. And it is so normal an experience.
