Family First NZ was rightly called a far-right organisation by @globalextremism.bsky.social It is anti-vaxx, anti-Te Tiriti, anti-trans, anti-LGBTIQA+, & a climate change denying Christian nationalist platform. It is with this known entity that Winston Peters did a *one-hour* interview with. #nzpol

No government can control international oil prices. We’ve cancelled the planned rise in fuel tax that was due on 1 January. It’s great to see electric vehicle sales increasing - we’re backing that by partnering with the private sector by rolling out EV chargers around the country.

I often see people claim that because clean energy sources like solar, wind, or nuclear are manufactured using fossil fuels their emissions are high. But thats absolutely not the case: even accounting for full lifecycle emissions they are vastly better than burning coal or gas:

Surely we must have plenty of fossil gas left and there is no coming shortage or need for an import terminal, right? It’s a long-term commitment after all where supply security plays a big factor. Oh, wait…

Yes, that would need to be split out then though, because that's currently collected by the electricity provider (imports) If you choose one only an export provider and leave as is currently you'd use the grid, but not pay for it's use If you add it to both you'd pay double Sure, it can be sorted

Charlie @ichaber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Number 3 looks interesting. Splitting buying and selling power could enable some interesting opportunities. How that'd work with lines charges and daily fixed-charges is a bit up in the air though.

Charlie @ichaber.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
That would be taxed, right? With a ~30% tax rate, that would result in ~$1.35bn in tax. If the rest cycles once that would give another ~$470mn in GST. With that logic you’d get ~$1.8bn back, right?

#NZpol Saw this excellent quote-reply to Simeon Brown’s latest attack on Labour. Worth sharing.
David Peez @RebelEkonomista

"The truck driver in Pakuranga helps pay off a lawyer's loan." No, Simeon. He doesn't. Not a cent.

When the government lends a student money, it creates the dollars and credits their account. No tradie's tax was collected and posted to a law degree. When the graduate repays, those dollars are deleted, drained back out like tax. They don't land in the truck driver's pocket either.

So nobody foots the bill. The worker and the graduate aren't on opposite sides of a ledger. Setting them against each other is the trick, and it runs on the same myth as "add it to the tab", that the government is a household counting coins. It issues the currency. The real limits are real resources and inflation, not a truck driver's tax bill.

"Someone always pays." Sure. Just never the person you keep pointing at.
