There's a debate to be had on the best way to tax capital that's kind of been suppressed by National's no-tax campaign and Labour's refusal to countenance anything other than their very mild CGT. Labour, the Greens and Opportunity all have different ideas with their own pros and cons.

Maybe some of the later Tamora Pierce books (when the success of Harry Potter showed kids would read much longer books)? Thinking of "Tempests and Slaughter" as one example.

Simply the best socio-economic policy anyone can vote for this election. If I was splitting hairs, I would say that the six months wait is about six months too long, but it's still a great start.

Labour needs to be clearer that it will rip up any agreement this govt signs during election with zero compensation. Counterparties need to be clearly warned. Weakness on this invites LNG gamblers to frame deal simply for a payout. #nzpol www.stuff.co.nz/politics/361...

Simeon Brown says controversial LNG contract could be signed during election campaign
Labour leader Chris Hipkins says it would be “recklessly irresponsible” for the government to to sign a binding LNG contract before the election.

Hmm. Wouldn't mind getting @musicalchairs.bsky.social opinion on this. His charts usually show NZ household *wealth* is quite high (the top 20% have a ton of assets) while NZ companies have a huge amount of debt.

Yep. the limit is approx $700M for all special needs grants per year. Was up to $960M in year ending June 2023, so that's a reduction of more than a quarter (and approx a third, in real terms).
a line wobbles up from june 2021 to June 2023, and then freefalls to end of 2024, where it flatlines til now. At an eyeballed approx $175M per quarter

They are rationing grants to a fixed budget - look at that blue line. Look at Auckland (on it's ass) and Christchurch (ticking over). Same story in both places. really? They've got a cash limit target - it's obvious.

And the truth is, the reason they’ve removed benefits from 18/19yos is •they screwed the economy •overall benefit costs are way higher than their “savings” • and the debt level is increasing • and they’re panicking • and MOAR CUTS is all they have the imagination for.

I saw this headline and thought "oh, are we going to start asking political parties what they're going to do about the current account deficit and stop the tunnel-vision focus on debt?" and then he handwaves the current account deficit away in one throwaway line.

Yep. This whole first paragraph, and the first sentence in the second one. Problem is Labour also fall for this “Surplus at all costs bullshit”. We need louder alternative economic voices showing voters there’s other ways to run a country. Because this approach simply isn’t working.
Ask things like, " why are we so worried about our national debt, when it's
actually low by international standards?" Or, "is the debt curve our biggest
concern if half a million of us now need food banks every month....?" Or,
"this is our plan to change the way we price energy.."
But Labour popped out for a packet of raspberry vapes back in 2023, leaving
Winnie as leader of the opposition, and have only just snuck back in the
room now. Meanwhile, NZF have been so busy rarking up the Youtube
Boomers, so even if they do suggest breaking up the gentailors no one
 takes it seriously.

This seems counter-intuitive. Charts you've posted before have shown that Japan is full of champion savers, and New Zealand is full of champion borrowers. And yet NZ has more net wealth per capita? Is it all down to not having any kind of tax on capital or is there more going on?
