Apple Day and Guided Walk at Thrandeston today - we had a plethora of apple & pear varieties to sample as well as rare specimen saplings to buy (for me, a Golden Russet). We are lucky to have such wonderful diversity. Among them a hard pear stored and used as winter survival food 500 years ago.

We’re cutting mercury emissions, but climate change could bring yesterday’s pollution back into the food chain. Thawing permafrost, wildfires, and warming waters may change how mercury moves and becomes toxic methylmercury. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Spathulata brevipes, the very rare relative of the more common Cauliflower fungus (Sparassis crispa). Found in Hampshire this week. They were massive (approx 50x40cm) & had the most delicious smell which filled the air. Don’t worry I didn’t eat them! This species has wide, fan-like lobes. #ukfungi

Following @alexoutside.bsky.social 's observation that two different powdery mildews were present on the same birch leaf (from a recent foray at Brett's Wood) based on the difference in size of the chasmothecia, I had another look at the sample to illustrate the size and structural differences.
The underside of a birch leaf, showing small dark circles which are the chasmothecia of powdery mildews. Two patches are ringed with a thin red line to illustrate the two different species.A microscopic image of powdery mildew chasmothecia. Near the top is a single large dark circle with several straight appendages with bulbous bottoms = Phyllactinia betulae. There are then many smaller dark circles with appendages that branch at the end = Erysiphe ornata.
