So, again, but in public this time: the idionomic approach folk would greatly benefit from engaging the literature on these approaches to reduce research waste, avoid rediscovering the wheel (but worse), etc.

Ian Hussey @ianhussey.mmmdata.io · 29/09/2026
As for the 'but worse' bit - my recollection is that none of the effects reported in that paper would survive multiple testing corrections, which arguably should have been applied.

Rediscovery work happened as predicted, with papers like "Beyond the average: Idionomic evidence of individual-specific variability in the psychological flexibility-mood relationship" coming out in 2026. Which was, to be clear, just EMA+multilevel models. doi.org/10.1016/j.jc...

Another round of discussions around the same time happened with @jamiecummins.bsky.social, who pointed out they were in other ways grasping for out-of-sample prediction models; they were again uninterested as a bespoke CBS solution was 'needed'.

Ian Hussey @ianhussey.mmmdata.io · 29/09/2026
Around 2019 I spoke to several folk in the ACT community about how their interest in so-called idionomic analyses was just rediscovering EMA studies, multilevel models and temporal network analysis. No one was interested - they implication was that they 'needed' a bespoke CBS branded approach.

Hayes has been banging this drum about idionomic analyses for 6+ years, with folk like @jamiecummins.bsky.social pointing out that its reinventing-the-wheel-but-worse for just as long. My experience is that the ACT community is insufficiently interested and aware of existing methods+stats work.

I was glad this point was covered by retractionwatch. Whether the work was affiliated with the university cannot depend on it being retracted. Affiliation determines what research integrity committee has oversight; this should be no-takesy-backsies when things go south.

Equally, discussions with the journal re verification kept coming back to data sharing concerns. But our request was that she simply demo the LLM data collection tech on a video call. IMO journals under-use this "show me the gizmo" approach to verification that a study could have occurred.

I mean, it's silliness all the way down. "ID Quotient" is listed as her affiliation in the article and the "ID Quotient Advisory Board" is listed as the ethics board in the retraction notice. But there is no record of a company by this or similar names existing in Canada or the US.
