I was glad this point was covered by retractionwatch. Whether the work was affiliated with the university cannot depend on it being retracted. Affiliation determines what research integrity committee has oversight; this should be no-takesy-backsies when things go south.

Reviews point out that it reads like AI slop, so I checked. The book contains 58 references to scientific articles and books. At least 6 are completely hallucinated. Several other are articles irrelevant to the claim. This is ironic given the author's public statements regarding AI and its misuse.

Separately, the author of the retracted article has written a book called "100 Ways to Future-Proof Your Brain" which she claims has sold over 100k copies. This would be remarkable given its negative reviews www.goodreads.com/book/show/23...

I can make some guesses why. Having worked there, UGent has had issues with far right activity and Flanders as a whole increasingly swings that way. Another scandal while I was there: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schild_...

Any suggestions for semi-popular online chi-square calculators? Sometimes less experienced people use them. To validate my {recalc} package, I'm reverse engineering them to make sure the package accommodate their results, as long as they're correct and sane. These are the ones I have already.

Here you can see the near zero correlations between the PTP (and its subscales) with other established measures and their subscales. Disattenuating for reliability doesn't rescue the situation.

And recalculating the SMD effect size from Ahmadpanah's M/SD/Ns for sleep quality under a variety of assumptions produces SMD estimate between [0.50. 0.58], not the meta's 2.38. Maybe I'm missing sth obvious of course. errors.shinyapps.io/recalc_indep...

Well, out of the gate, I don't think the numbers in Ahmadpanah match the numbers for Ahmadpanah reported in Zhang's meta-analysis.

I have managed to abstract the template for replies to critiques.
A reply to critique

In this reply to the recent critique of our article, we: mischaracterize the critique; mischaracterize our own original claims; respond only to the peripheral arguments while remaining silent about the critique’s most devastating points; claim that the issues raised do not affect our core conclusions, regardless of whether this is the case or not; radically change the implied generality of our original claims; commit ad hominem while accusing others of it; and leverage the fact that we are likely to have the last word to generally muddy the waters.

Negative controls are very useful for spotting errors and data quality issues. If 1/3 of participants disagree that playing poker in person for real money is gambling, broader questions are raised about the other findings. pubpeer.com/publications...

So this response to critique is that… @kauspurg.bsky.social is *too experienced* in writing critiques?? The argument for bias is also silly. People read many articles and write critiques of the ones with particular issues. Very bad response.

Mediation analysis is surprisingly easy to verify using reported betas, p values, and Ns. Eg the indirect a*b path should be, well, a multiplied by b. Sometimes its not, like in this article claiming SSRI efficacy is mediated by expectations. Whoops. pubpeer.com/publications...

Not to be an uber pedant/nerd, but i'm fascinated by the plausibility of SMD effect sizes and so collect really large ones. The whole government change between year is about Cohen's d = 1.14, whereas we recently estimated the preference for chocolate over poop as Cohen's d = 5.57.

Plotting the effect sizes included in the meta immediately shows something is likely off, as the distribution is highly bimodal and has huge magnitude d values. One key thing that can cause bimodality in meta effect: systematic confusion of SE and SD for many of the effect sizes.

Basic questions like "how many participants are in the dataset?" can produce surprisingly different answers between analysts. Results from students in my class in data wrangling in tidyverse, who are good at wrangling but still have to make semi-subjective choices:

When we combine this with the results of the 2015 replication, we get a choose your own analytic adventure. Even putting the design issues aside and taking the data at face value, no end point leads the reader to conclude that hierarchy interventions are more effective than distinction.

The raw data is now lost to the sands of time, but a multiverse analysis can still be conducted on the differences between the conditions at post by extracting data from the figures. Results show no differences in means under any set of analytic choices.

Ian Hussey @ianhussey.mmmdata.io · 26/01/2026
Foody et al 2013 contains no control condition. People often raise the point that such designs are potentially confounded by regression to the mean. This isn't hypothetical here: the authors cite previous work using the same induction procedure that shows their results are entirely explained by R2M.

Surely our job is to critically evaluate research, not merely repeat authors' talking points. Your opening tweet is a clearly causal claim that you've repeated, which immediately doesn't stand up to scrutiny. This is a ubiquitous critique of this type of work.
