‘Why Do You Let Me Lie Here Wastefully?’ in Best British Short Stories 2026. I’ve kept to myself this year, working on my blog, so I wasn’t expecting *this*. Excited to know that more people will read the story. Overawed to be in such good company. @saltpublishing.com
Paperback: Best British Short Stories 2026 ed. Nicholas Royle. First page of my story in this book. Title: ‘Why Do You Let Me Lie Here Wastefully?’A choice paragraph from the story and probably the section I’m most nervous about: the reveal.

I'm proud of my three collections of ghost stories and weird fiction, not least because together they've apparently created a sense of what Newmanesque might mean. Get them here: www.amazon.co.uk/stores/Ray-N...
Municipal Gothic (black, yellow, brutalist tower block); Intervals of Darkness (black, red, illustration of a mysterious void); Thin Places in Hard Concrete (pink and pale blue, floating brutalist staircase). There books, 37 stories.

I love this book very much but I wonder about the cover image. I could be wrong but it appears to show varieties of pear, where apples would have been a choice more relevant to the book. Perhaps they couldn't find such an image. A small niggle!
