What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

I am starting a reading group in a prison today. Looking forward to it. Reminded of that time I went to visit a mate in young offenders. On leaving, my short hair and scruffy jumper caught the guard who grabbed my shoulder and span me round - ‘OI! Oh .. sorry love, thought you were one of ours.”

I have added some drawings to my web shop. I started these as research for a book I want to write about drawing. Thinking about the value of drawing, it struck me that in terms of literal value, I have sold art but never a drawing. So that too has become part of my research seventysevenseas.co.uk

Drawing -High Tide Selling (quite cheaply) if you’re interested. There’s a little bit about it in the alt text
A page with an arrangement of imaginary shapes, drawn in graphite, that made me think of the uncertain objects that wash up along the high tide mark. I like the way drawing, by falsely claiming observational techniques, allows imaginary reality, and invented arrangements.

Protest that endures, I think, is moved by a hope far more modest than that of public success: namely, the hope of preserving qualities in one's own heart and spirit that would be destroyed by acquiescence. Wendell Berry, What Are People For?

Not to be some wild-eyed innocent, but I think it should be slightly bigger news that The Lancet have crunched the numbers and found that Musk's USAID cuts will kill 14 million people. And that's just by 2030. That's 9,600 people a day, every day, until the next world cup rolls around.

It's so nice to get messages like this as books can sometimes feel as if they slide quietly away. It's lovely to know a year on that Beast is still capable of prompting someone to think about death, and making them cry - in the best ever-loving way. @ofmooseandmen.bsky.social
screen shot of post that reads: Hi Lulu, I have just finished 'Beast'. It has been staring at me for about 2yrs from my bookcase. I loved it, it made me thing about relationships, envy spirituality and death. (And everlasting existence). And it even made me cry .. The book I read before this was about Tractors so this was a nice change.. A wonderful book Lulu. Thank You. The cover of Beast. Red background, black silhouette of a rabbit, BEAST in white lettering.

The Guardian once asked me 'what one change would you make to achieve Black equality in Britain?' and it feels appropriate to share my answer again
Athena Kugblenu: Allow Black people to be mediocre too!
Athena Kugblenu
I would like to replace #blackexcellence with #blackmediocrity. True equality is when our talent:recognition ratio is allowed to be as broad as white people’s. Lewis Hamilton had to win two Formula One titles before he bagged BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2014; Greg Rusedski only had to get battered by Pat Rafter to win his. Kwasi Kwarteng steered the economy towards an iceberg and got sacked. Jeremy Hunt drove the NHS over a cliff, now he’s chancellor. Don’t get me started on how many football clubs get ruined by freshly retired white footballers while very qualified Black managers are overlooked. When the arc of the moral universe bends towards Black people failing upwards as their peers do, we will be in the promised land.

Dorset earlier today. I love those towers. I love the murky blue of the sky.
A hill, the gold of dry grass, skewed lines of dark green shrubs and trees. Three slender radio/telecoms/whatever they are towers on the horizon. The sky is hazy and blue, but as though mixed with a bit of the earth, it is a thick, dirty blue.

If I ran a book shop I would have a short novels and novellas shelf and a Contemporary Fiction that Reads Like a Classic shelf. Not those only, but it would be useful. And the second would spark debates, which would be fun.

This is possibly the first time I have paid attention to my drawings, as before now it was something I did without any thought. I'm interested in seeing what the connections are, but with a small sample size, there is little. Any way, these two are from yesterday.
shapes tailing off into other shapes, reminiscent of a hoof and an organ. In the middle a music standa face in profile with a black circle on the cheek. something that could be a hood or a screwed up paper bag. Possibly shoulders beneath. some sort of penumbra behind the face
