Last week, Carlos Machado and I received scholars from different academic backgrounds to discuss poverty drivers in the long Late Antiquity (300 - 800 AD). I had the opportunity to speak about Credit, Debt, and Social Mobility in Late Antiquity. It was an enriching experience.

Yesterday I attended a great conference in Rio de Janeiro that brought together historians and economists to discuss the issue of financial crises. I had the privilege of being invited to speak on the crisis of the 3rd century and its consequences for public and private finances in Late Antiquity.

New research published by Robert Portass, Peter Sarris and Caroline Goodson (@cjg70.bsky.social) now offers a critical response to Wickham’s ideas ⬇️
