Never quite feel safe till they get off the train, especially when they’re standing side on to you. There‘s that moment of maximum danger when you can feel them eyeing you up and down as you look ahead. Then it passes, and they walk on.

War breaks out in Ethiopia. Tigrayan forces attack federal government positions on two fronts & capture the region's airports. Tragically, shuttle diplomacy efforts by the international community have failed. Ethiopia is on the brink of being plunged back into all out civil war. It's a disaster.

All other things aside sorry to kick the same horse but it just won't die: English is not the only autochthonous language of the territory known as the United Kingdom, and therefore it is fundamentally against the principles of basic justice to demand all election literature be in it.

Low Energy: my SKETCH of MPs trying to save us from the impact of war. thecritic.co.uk/low-...
Britain isn’t really in the war, but we’re still feeling its effects. So Rachel Reeves had come to update us on options to keep the public’s bills manageable. Opposite her was Mel Stride. A stoppable force was meeting a moveable object.

The Tory backbenches provided a marvellously cynical soundtrack. “I am holding meetings with supermarkets and with banks,” Reeves declared, and was greeted with an ironic “ooooh!” The competition authority had “launched a market study,” she went on, which got a “woooh!” Britain is these days in most ways a mid-sized power that finds itself at the mercy of events, but we still lead the world in sarcasm.

This type of identity politics is such an arid dead end, albeit a well-meaning one, that if people actually *follow it* makes it much harder for everyone else, because it means that everyone who is not seen as 'middle-aged white' has to make so much of their life and work talking about this stuff.

Yesterday evening, for the second time in a year, the Met Police raided Westminster Quaker Meeting House and arrested a number of young nonviolent activists. STATEMENT: www.quaker.org.uk/news-and-eve...
Westminster Meeting House raided by Metropolitan Police again. Statement: “For Quakers, faith and action are inseparable. Peaceful protest, prayer and nonviolent action are integral parts of many Quakers' religious life.

Whilst we take the planning of criminal acts very seriously, we believe that this incident is a deliberate targeting of committed young people who want to make our country a more equitable place. This raid is part of a systematic stifling of dissent.

That this is the second time in a year that the police have raided our meeting house dramatically illuminates the broader trend in the UK of cracking down on those who disagree with the government. The right to protest is fundamental to our democracy. It's a key part of how people make their voices heard between elections.” – Oliver Robertson, Head of Witness and Worship

When assessing threats from fascism, the most important thing is not to assess how ridiculous those threats seem, but to assess the scale of the resources - both military and financial - that the fascists can use to carry out those threats. What seems ridiculous today can be executed tomorrow.
