There's a reason why Somerville hasn't had a traffic death in 4 years. The city isn't perfect, but they've made a concerted effort to design many streets around people and not cars. You can still drive, but you're going to have to do so slowly and while paying attention.

Somerville is intentionally making roads harder to drive on. It’s getting results. - The Boston Globe
To make roads safer, the city says, sometimes you have to put some obstacles in drivers' way.

Funding private health care in Ontario costs more and leads to longer waits
Amid belt-tightening at Sarnia's hospital, and others in Ontario, provincial investment in for-profit clinics has been on the rise.

The myth Alberta 'subsidizes' the rest of Canada is the most powerful meme in the separatist armoury. But it's utterly false. I show that most Albertans get more back from federal programs than they personally pay in federal taxes, for @thetyee.ca: thetyee.ca/Opinion/2026... #abpoli /2

It always infuriates me when people react to congestion pricing by yelling about the "cost." Every time you drive you're paying — our entire society is paying. But the myriad costs of driving are just accepted as the default. As normal. I do hope we're starting to see a shift in that.

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).

When it comes to this premier, Donald Trump’s enemy is still my enemy www.thestar.com/gift-redeem?...
I’m old enough to remember when the Ford Bros., Doug and his late brother Rob, were routinely referred to as “Trumpish.” Their brand of right-wing, cronyish populism was viewed as a historical front-runner to Trump. They were prototypes of the spiteful, “outsider” politicos, who peddled anti-elitist rhetoric while themselves being members of the economic upper crust. They were antagonistic towards the media. And they called out political rivals as phonies, despite being inveterate fabricators. I’m also old enough to remember when Doug Ford very publicly supported Trump’s presidency. That was, like, two years ago.

I think all these criticisms still hold. And Ford’s own record (bracketing telling Trump to pucker up and smooch his formidable behind) is nothing to boast about. There’s the favour-trading. The attacks on Ontario’s Greenbelt and public health care system. Recently, he bragged about yanking bike lanes off Toronto streets in an effort to fight gridlock. What a great idea! After all, nothing eases the flow of bumper-to-bumper traffic quite like … more cars. But these sorts of policies are diminished by the mere virtue of Ford’s attacks on Trump.

Ottawa is my example too. Small-time thinking and multilayered authorities stymie creative thinking and lock this city into status quo/outmoded development ideas. As a capital city it should be so much better at everything, but it comes up short on nearly any measure of a modern city
