Consequences. My cartoon in today's @theageaustralia.bsky.social and @sydmorningherald.bsky.social
A political cartoon by Megan Herbert showing two older conservative men having coffee in a busy cafe. One of them holds a newspaper open to an article titled "Win for activists: Coal mine must account for knock-on emissions." He says to the other man, "This ruling sets a terrible precedent for people who want to avoid the long-range consequences of their actions on a technicality."

Indy the dog lays on the couch beside me, cushioning my trackball mouse on his fluffy back. he is asleep. the act of taking a photo of Indy has awakened and annoyed him. now his head is up and he’s debating moving.

"Scaled globally, these unit costs translate to roughly USD 2.1 trillion in private and USD 7.2 trillion in social costs per year under an internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV)-dominated system, totaling approximately USD 9.3 trillion annually, equivalent to 8.3% of global GDP."
This study quantifies the private and social costs of global automobility and evaluates the potential economic benefits of a transition to shared electric autonomous mobility-as-a-service (E-AV-MaaS). Using comprehensive cost components, including accidents, emissions, air pollution, noise, infrastructure, land use, and resource impacts, it is estimated that private car travel currently incurs approximately USD 0.16 per vehicle-kilometer in private costs and USD 0.55 per vehicle-kilometer in social costs. Scaled globally, these unit costs translate to roughly USD 2.1 trillion in private and USD 7.2 trillion in social costs per year under an internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV)-dominated system, totaling approximately USD 9.3 trillion annually, equivalent to 8.3% of global GDP. Under a full E-AV-MaaS scenario with 25% reduced vehicle-kilometers traveled, social costs fall to approximately USD 0.30 per kilometer and USD 2.4 trillion in total. Private costs are estimated between USD 0.7 and 1.9 trillion, as lower parking expenditures are offset by the higher per-kilometer cost of autonomous electric vehicle services; private cost comparisons do not account for mode-specific utility derived from car ownership. This scenario reduces the global cost of automobility by roughly USD 5.6 trillion, driven almost entirely by social cost reductions. The results underscore that 77% of the cost of automobility is currently externalized.

Some 3,400 years ago, an Egyptian artisan captured a sense of speed and elegance in this beautifully carved handle in the shape of a horse! 🐴 ❤️ New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep III, c. 1390–1352 BC. The Met 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ivory handle of a light whip or fly whisk carved in the shape of a horse. The ivory body of the horse is stained reddish-brown, and the mane and tail are black. The horse is seen in profile facing left. Its legs are outstretched in front and at the back in what scholars refer to as a ‘flying gallop' position, with a gracefully arched back. The eyes are inlaid with garnet, one of which is missing (not seen in my photo). It is displayed on a vertical, thin metal stand in a museum display case. This beautiful object is dated to the New Kingdom period, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep IlI, c. 1390-1352 BC. Dimensions: L: 14.7 cm × H: 5.5 cm × W: 2 cm
