Second week on strike with UCU Edinburgh. We will be on strike for five weeks - taking out the entire first half of term, up to the first assessments - but we could be back in the classroom tomorrow if management withdrew the threat of compulsory redundancies.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

Again, let's just stop & remember that age-based legal restrictions on access to social media/online services are a bad idea & infringe the rights of young people to speak, access information and arts & culture, find community and play. Then look at the madness involved in trying to make them work.

All ethnonationalism is racism. Sorry to burst bubble. You can't run around criticising boat stabbers for their 'English patriotism' and then say 'oh but all ethnic groups deserve their own homeland' like @owenjones.bsky.social What, anyway, is an 'ethnic group' if not race by another other name?

What's going on here is the same as always: middle class bigots want to have their bigotries coddled and think that being just house trained enough to not use slurs makes their behaviour acceptable in mixed company.

Once again I am pointing out that no matter how good a proxy for "has money" you think age is, it isn't actually especially accurate.

By chance and for the first time ever, this year's modules are arranged in number order on my online dashboard. Thank god. It's not as good as the system just letting me rearrange them but it will do for one year.

I'll never be convinced a government is taking the country's issues seriously unless they announce truly massive increases to local authority budgets alongside whatever other improvements they suggest.

This is the definition of a PR stunt. Mahmood's "safe routes" are so restrictive and limited to be effectively worthless. Considering Labour has closed more safe routes than previous government, this is a purely media driven move over providing genuine protection. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Rees-Mogg is the modern Theresa May: someone whose racial politics were so extreme that they laid the foundation for someone else even worse, and then whose dismay at what they had created was intepreted as moderation. But he's still extreme and always will be.

People in cities are ignored, by and large, by the government and the media, and yet the line is that we are pandered to and catered. We want better, cheaper housing and better rent controls and tenant's rights. We want cheaper/free public transport and the cost of living lowered. All ignored.

This is just "we want conscription" but without wanting to actually make the political case that it's good or necessary because it would mean explaining the precise nature of the threat that they think is facing the UK and that'll get very embarrassing, very quickly.

I don't think it is a good idea to idolise the pension systems of countries like Germany. The UK state pension needs to be higher but the figures one sees from places like Germany are averages. Many people's pensions are a lot lower because the system is designed to preserve class distinction.

AI didn’t “go rogue.” People connected a computer system they know can mess with another computer system in unpredictable ways to less advanced computer system and it messed with that computer system in unpredicted ways. As @tressiemcphd.bsky.social argues, don’t lose sight that *people* did that.

It’s worth considering the confused role academia plays in radical centrism as a movement. It is, first, a muddled target: a bastion of wokeness, brainwashing, ideological compulsion but also irrelevance, elitism, weakness. But it’s also a magic well of authority for heroes like Pinker and Peterson.

But the actual problem is not who gets the golden ticket this year, but rather why a socially vital sector (do we not think knowledge, about society and about nature, is valuable?) has been eviscerated to the point where a steady job teaching and doing research is a golden ticket in the first place.

n the blog, OpenAI detailed examples of its AI models misbehaving so they could achieve a task or succeed in a test. The incidents included the models generating instructions to get around restrictions imposed on them, hiding mistakes and fabricating information.

People refusing to understand what "toxic masculinity" and "black lives matter" means is: 1) An example of anti-intellectualism - a refusal to believe an adult can learn new terms and concepts. 2) An attempt to control language to make resistance to hierarchy harder. Use jargon! It helps us!

So 285 villagers vote in a silly poll and the government hears the “roar”. 1000 people attend a mass lobby for trans equality at Westminster, and nothing. Changes that affect your community can be distressing, Lisa. Like segregation, healthcare bans, new education policy, new prison policy…
From the BBC News article “Village votes to leave UK over asylum housing plan”

Responding to the village saying it had
"roared"
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told
BBC Breakfast: "I think they have - we have heard it, we are listening.
"I do really understand that when changes are made that affect your community it can be very distressing.”
