Listen, if you're going to live in a house, it's just going to have asbestos in it. The asbestos works, folks. If you're going to draw the line at "no asbestos in anything" you're going to have to live in a yurt

ultimately if your reaction to someone saying "I think this is bad, I am ethically unhappy about it, I don't want to touch it" is to go "well it's useful so. it's everywhere. nothing to be done" I just kind of think you're an asshole

I said earlier that the school I work for is pushing AI pretty hard and the state is requiring that we be 'trained' to teach it. To respond, I am working with my union local on drafting contract language that protects a faculty's right to not use AI in the classroom as part of academic freedom.

I would recommend to fellow educators to get this interpretation of academic freedom in writing now before this becomes impossible in the coming years.

OH YEAH i forgot that Tombstone was there! i totally expected him to pop back up since Scorpion got a reprise, but i guess that's my bad for thinking that a Spider-Man movie could actually be a Spider-Man movie and not, like, a backdoor X-Men/New Avengers prequel

the thing is, i long ago lost confidence that any given creative choice in an MCU movie can be blamed on the filmmakers when time and again they've been victims of unrestrained studio interference by executive auteurs who don't know how to read comics or tell stories. like it really could be anyone

i only learned this fact because my partner really likes the Damage Control comics and was baffled that Tillman isn't playing the named character he's obviously meant to be playing, so i looked him up and was just AGOG. how does this decision get made? only through a headless game of IP telephone

has anyone talked about this? i feel like it should be a bigger point of contention that in the latest Spider-Man they replaced an existing Damage Control character with an unrelated nazi who gets jobbed by Magneto, and then cast Tramell Tillman to play him. am i crazy? is not that extremely wack?

here is the entire wiki entry for the character. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...
screenshot of MCU wiki.

William Metzger was created by writer Joe Casey and artist Steve Rude, and solely appeared in the miniseries X-Men: Children of the Atom #1 (1999). Metzger was the head of the Anti-Mutant Militia before being killed by Magneto.[247] Metzger was modeled after white supremacist Tom Metzger.[248]
William Metzger in other media

William Metzger appears in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, portrayed by Tramell Tillman.[249] This version is the head of the Department of Damage Control.[247]

it's crazy how these movies convince you they're almost kind of good as you're watching them, then you stop to think about it for a couple minutes and you're like "why did they hire Tramell Tillman to play a character named after a real-life white supremacist?"

#PPOD: Galaxies warp, stretch, and multiply across this view from NASA’s JWST. The golden galaxies belong to the massive galaxy cluster MACS J0454.1-0300, seen as it was about 8 billion years ago. The cluster’s enormous gravity bends spacetime and distorts light... 🧪 🔭
A massive galaxy cluster, made of many golden elliptical galaxies with the largest, brightest one in the centre. Heavily distorted orange galaxies appear all around the cluster, the largest concentrated in a large arc around the cluster's centre; these are images of very distant galaxies, created by gravitational lensing. A few galaxies are large and bluish-white in colour; bright, nearby stars are the same colour.

...more than once in a single galaxy cluster. The lens also acts as a natural magnifying glass: some tiny star-forming regions, only about five light-years across, are magnified more than 300 times, allowing JWST to probe structures that would otherwise be too distant and faint to study.

...Assumption #4 has been driving me batshit, yet no one seems to realize it: if you're worried trans ppl might potentially harm your Dem candidate's chances, then YOUR CANDIDATE MADE A BAD DECISION! so why not join us in trying to get them to reverse position? juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...
screenshot from linked-to essay that reads:
Assumption #4: The elephant in the room that no one is talking about
There is a striking disconnect between Talarico, Turek, et al. — who have clearly made a political calculation that abandoning trans rights will help them more than it will hurt them in this election — and the many cisgender liberals I’ve encountered online who are absolutely freaking out over the possibility that trans people’s critiques and protests will ultimately tank said candidates.
Both of these things cannot simultaneously be true!
If you think your favorite candidate enacted the correct political strategy, then there is no reason to berate trans people for protesting it, as those protests should already be baked into your candidate’s calculations. So why are you berating trans people then? (Unless, of course, you enjoy berating trans people just for the sake of it.)
Alternatively, if you think trans people *are* capable of tanking your favorite candidate via our criticisms and protests, doesn’t that imply that your candidate (and their consultants and strategists) totally fucked up in their political calculations here? And if they did fuck up, shouldn’t you be reaching out and complaining to *them* (rather than berating trans people), in the hope that they might reverse their bad decision?

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

You can buy a huge media conglomerate with money you don't have using leveraged debt you'll never pay off and then immediately start firing its workers, but people will still say that capitalism is compatible with democracy and is capable of "reform" or "regulation"
