In this case, the outside professors are really arguing with their fellow conservatives who imposed the civics center on campus. Having seen the Regents eliminate faculty governance for actual Iowa faculty, they want to claim it for right-wing faculty from elsewhere.

"I appreciate the work you have put into the Center for Intellectual Freedom," Cramer told Lowery. "But it appears we are going down different paths. The Board of Regents is moving forward with a new administrative agreement with the university and with hiring the permanent director.
Rather than acting as an advisory committee, you seem to want to run the center your way and you're not respecting the Board's decisions. It appears that you're trying to use the hiring process as leverage with the Board to get what you want."
