Fun fact: under ancient Jewish law, false witnesses (specifically ones who were proven to have not been at the scene of the crime when it was committed) were sentenced to whatever they tried to do to the defendant.

This is ridiculous, this is not what's happening. This is worse than the no in-unit laundry take. People are just looking at how elections and parties in the US work, and some people think that how things work isn't their problem, and want their vote be a consumer decision with moral valence.

The Gairloch Pictish Stone displayed and interpreted at the very special Gairloch Museum - housed in a former nuclear bunker + exceptional home bakes - and a rare discovery on the north west coast of Scotland. #StandingStoneSunday Further info: www.gairlochmuseum.org/pictish-ston
Image of the Gairloch Pictish (symbol) Stone on display at the Gairloch Museum. A rare west coast carved standing stone, vertically mounted on a wooden display board, approx 100 x 50 x 10 cm, and containing carvings of a fish and lower part of an eagle.Image of the interpretation board of the Gairloch Pictish Stone which includes an illustration of the carved side of the stone with the carvings overdrawn and highlighted. The three paragraphs of accompanying text explain the materiality (local Torridonian sandstone) of the stone, its late 19C discovery and subsequent use as masonry and its significance as such stones are rarity in the north west of Scotland, a region not traditionally associated with the Picts. It concludes with an interpretation of such stones as grave markers; the carved paired symbols reflecting/identifying the deceased.

Winter is coming. Soon the raccoons will have their winter coats and their sizes will dramatically increase. Though this one is already pretty big. In other news, it appears we only have a couple of hummingbirds here now all the others have left to complete their migration South. I will miss them.
A black and white night photo showing part of my garden. There are small landscaping rocks in the foreground with plants, shrubs and flowers in the middle and background. A raccoon is sitting down, looking away from the camera, in the middle of the frame. It looks large though he or she assures me the camera adds 10 pounds. Its little raccoon ears are visible as is part of its thick bushy, black-ringed tail.

Do you like supporting your local eel historian? Well! Have I got some opportunities for you! 1. Over at my etsy store, I'm selling subway-style maps of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and Narnia. You can get them as prints or as digital versions! #LOTR #maps www.etsy.com/shop/Surpris...
Art. Subway-style map of the itinerary in The Hobbit. The main journey is show in three different lines: red (Hobbiton to Goblin Town); green (Goblin Town to the Elvenking's Halls); and blue (Elvenking's Halls to Erebor). There are multiple stops on these lines. There is a yellow line going back from Erebor to Hobbiton, making stops at Beorn's Hall, Rivendell, and the Troll's Lair. There is an orange line directly from the Iron Hills on the map's right side to Erebor, and a purple line from Gundabad directly to Erebor.

The map's title reads: "Hobbit Transit Map" and there are directions for both There and Back Again listing the lines and transfer points. Between them, in the middle of the page, is a dragon drawn to resemble the dragon on Thror's Map from The Hobbit.

A key shows the names of each colored line:
Red: Western Lands Line
Green: Mountains and Forests Line
Blue: Barrel Line
Yellow: Gandalf Express
Orange: Iron Hills Business Line
Purple: Orc and Goblin Reserve Line

Text at the bottom right reads Surprised Eel Maps, 2025Art. Subway style map to go with The Lord of the Rings, showing the different pathways of various parties throughout the book. The title reads: "Lord of the Rings Transit Map: One Does Not Simply Walk Ino Mordor When One Can Ride." The map takes up the middle part of the page, and there are two keys. The one on the left is titles "Standard Service Lines, and has color keys matched to the subway lines on the map. Lines are named:
"Shire-Bree Commuter Line
Old Forrest Crescent
Wildland Scenic Line
Fellowship Line
Gollum / Sméagol Line
Uruk Hai Express
Three Hunters Line
Fangorn Slow Service
Rohan to Gondor Business Line
Black Ships Ferry Service
Oliphant Direct Line
Army of the West Line
Gandalf Express

A smaller key on the right side of the map is labeled: "Limited Service Lines" and has color keys matched to the following names lines:
"Eagle Express
Paths of the Dead Line
Nazgûl Search & Resuce
Valinor Ltd."

A note at the bottom reads:
"* Mount Doom station only accepts Rings of Power in payment. Plan accordingly."Art. A subway style map on a parchment background. The map's title reads: "Narnia Transit Map: Talking Beasts Ride Free." The map has seven keys, one for each of the seven books in C.S. Lewis's Narinia series. The main movements of characters and action in each book are traced by colored lines, like a subway map. Locations in each book are marked out as stops in the lines. There is a drawing of a lion above the title of the map, and in the lower right corner there is a compass rose.

The map is meant to be read from the bottom up because, as I said, I wanted it to show the eels' perspective, moving forward in the world. If you had this map on the table in front of you, the bottom would be closest to you. You'd be looking forward, up the page, ready to travel with the eels!
A long, skinny map titled: "Life and Travels of the European Eel" with a subtitle reading: "From the Eel's Perspective." A label at the bottom of the map reads: "Begin Here." The map top half of the map is an mirror copy of the bottom half.

I will put the full text of the column in the alt text in an image in the next post in the thread.

The map goes from the bottom of the page up, starting in the Sargasso Sea. An set of arrows show the eels paths to shore, then up a river and into a marshland. The arrows continue up the page to show the eel leaving the marshland and heading back downstream, and out to sea. The land is green and verdant at the bottom of the map, because the eels migrate upstream in the spring. The land is brown and dry at the top of the map, because eels migrate downstream in the autumn.

A column of text on the side tells about the eels' journeys and changes. It is more text than I can relate in the space allowed here. Each paragraph has an arrow pointing up to the next one, and they are designed to be read from the bottom of the page going upwards.

For years, Harding University had a tradition of putting out an American flag for each victim of 9/11. My dad, who passed in August, led the push to collect and include flags representing the nationality of every person who died that day. It’s something I’m very proud of.
Since 2003, the American Studies Institute Distinguished Scholars Honors program has been involved in leading the Harding community in remembering the victims of the September I1, 2001 terrorist attack. The 9-ıı Never Forget memorial flag project began in 2010 when the ASI students decided to join in the national Never Forget project created by Young America's Foundation, honoring those who lost their lives in the attack. In zo1l, the Pi Sigma Alpha organization, under the faculty sponsorship of Dr. Mark Elrod, joined ASi students by honoring the international victims and the countries they represented, correctly reflecting the international impact the attack made. The two organizations have since made this a joint service project, symbolizing the common bond we all share as those who remember the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001United Kingdom flags, donated by the Searcy HS Beta Club (total victims, 67)Background, Philippines

Wonderful ancient artistry! About 40,000 years ago, this small, graceful horse figurine was carved from mammoth ivory! Imagine the #IceAge artist at work, sitting by the warmth of a fire, creating what is the world’s oldest known figure of a horse! 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a profile view of a small horse figurine with head to the left, displayed against a dark background. Sculpted from mammoth ivory, the surface is a mottled greyish-earthy-brown colour with a shiny patina. It was once likely off-white in colour. The head is gracefully lowered with a long and elegant curving neck, and a convex curved back. The four legs are incomplete. The top of the tail remains. The eyes, nostrils, and mouth are carved as indents. It measures a mere 2.5 cm in height, 4.8 cm width, and 0.7 cm depth.

The 'Vogelherd Horse' was excavated in 1931, together with a number of other ivory animal figurines from the Vogelherd Cave, Swabian Jura, Germany. It is the oldest known sculpture of a horse. On display at the Museum of Ancient Cultures, at Hohentübingen Castle, Tübingen, Germany.

so my spouse is part of a weirdly intense but mostly benign men's workout group that meets at like, 5:30am outside every day, even in winter. they do a lot of burpees and lugging cinder blocks up hills and stuff.
they take turns leading the workouts and tomorrow is his turn. I asked what he was planning. he handed me a sheet of William Carlos William poems from a large stack he'd printed.
I said "what" and he explained, helpfully, "it's a William Carlos William themed workout." I asked what inspired it and he said "l've been planning this for months."

it was a smash hit.
a dozen guys showed up (more than usual). spouse brought a red wheelbarrow and they took turns bringing cinder blocks up the hill with it. then they broke up in teams and did a relay with an "icebox" (cooler filled with 40lbs of ice). at the end he opened the cooler to reveal it was full of beach plum lacroix and all the guys cheered. they drank sparkling water as he read 'approach of winter' out loud.
he was home by 6:30am.
