Support the National Trust by voting for Council members by 11:59pm on 30 October 2026. Quickvote is convenient if you're short of time or worried about inadvertently voting for Restore Trust's Bonigala, Cristea, Goldman, Mealing or Omrani. In our often bad times, the Trust's doing good things.

The Leader of Havering Council has launched the Administration's long-term vision and ambitions for the future of the Borough.
Called 'The Havering Plan 2040' and unveiled at last night's Cabinet Meeting (16 September 2026), it sets out the aspiration of 'Creating London's Super Suburb:
This aspiration will be met by creating the best place in London for residents to LIVE. LEARN. EARN
The best place for businesses to INVEST. GROW. THRIVE.

To assume a supposedly egalitarian 'Anglo-Saxon' golden age ignores the fact that pre-conquest England was very much plugged into developments on the continent & assumes that nothing would have changed. Well, it blantly was as William's was the second violent conquest of the 11thc for starters. 12/

An ancient listing, flagged in an old cutting from the Guardian, for a job at Southeast Missouri State University, to teach philosophy and religious studies. Startlingly frank.
An old newspaper clipping, apparently from the Guardian:

ENCLOSED is an announcement of a tenure-track position in philosophy at the rank of assistant professor. We hope to fill this position rapidly... We are more interested in looking at candidates with real teaching experience than in newly minted PhD's, who might have unrealistic expectations about the possibilities for academic growth at an institution such as ours. Southeast Missouri State University is a regional university which serves students in the southeast portion of the state including St Louis.
Our students tend to be poorly prepared for college level work, intellectually passive, interested primarily in partying, and culturally provincial in the extreme. We offer a major in philosophy, but do not usually have more than two students officially declared as majors at any given time... We also offer a rellgious studies minor; most of the students who declare this minor are shocked to learn that Moses might not have written the Pentateuch and regard higher criticism as secular humanist propaganda.
The academic environment at
SEMO is distinctly non-intellectual - somewhat like a Norman Rockwell painting— and the candidate cannot expect to attract students by offering courses that assume innate curiosity about ideas and books, or intellectual playful-ness, or independence of moral and political thought.

Across these centuries most will-makers took the trouble to describe in detail some items they bequeathed to particular relatives and friends. For instance in 1603 William Radcliffe of London left his sister ‘a gold ring with a picture of death’s head, for all her unkindness’. 4/
A very large handwritten book. It is a will register - the clerk of the court copied into this book all wills proved in the court. A handwritten will, it is very messy with lots of crossing out.

If you want to accommodate their 🐛,you'll need to plant their food plants - Lady's Bedstraw. 🌿🌱🐛🌍🪲🌱🇬🇧

🥗 British sea-weeds. Drawn from Professor Harvey's "Phycologia britannica." London, Bell and Daldy, 1863. [Source]
Illustration from 1863 showing detailed, colored scientific drawings of six British seaweed species. The algae exhibit various shapes and textures: Melobesia polymorpha has a flat, irregular pattern; Melobesia fasciculata displays clustered, tubular branches; Melobesia agariciformis is circular and densely textured; Melobesia lichenoides rests on a green base with layered lobes; Hildenbrandtia rubra shows a reddish, elongated form with cut sections; and Hapalidium Phylactidium has a fan-shaped thallus alongside branching purple stems. Each is carefully labeled and set within boxed panels on a neutral background, highlighting diverse morphological features important for marine botanical study.
