Caixa digitalizando serviços e atendimentos, fechando agências e esquecendo que somos o banco que é parte da política social do governo. Nós atendemos os vulneráveis e a alta gestão está esquecendo disso, focando em ser um banco comercial. (Alta gestão é do centrão, by the way).

This is the third installment in the AI Killed My Job series, after tech workers and translators. It focuses on visual artists, illustrators, and graphic designers. I received so many submissions from visual artists that I couldn't include them all, and, just a word of warning, some are very bleak.

Freelance illustration gigs drying up. Ad agencies using Midjourney instead of hiring human artists. Costume design turned over to AI wholesale. Good work vanishing. These are the stories of working visual artists, who describe losing jobs, wages, and hope as their clients and bosses embrace AI.

This suggests that "AI" is as much a cultural shift as it is a technological one—the hype-shrouded AI boom has given managers encouragement and cover to break previous norms and standards, even if it means a loss in quality. As the boom appears to give way to a bust, that may be all the clearer.

Many translators paint a picture of how, despite there being no revolutionary advance in automating translation, the floor began to fall out from the industry around 2023. OpenAI, it seemed, made 'good enough' translations acceptable, and demand for quality work evaporated.

Instead of regurgitating the bromide that LLMs are just "autocomplete on steroids" (even by people who know better), maybe we can actually engage in some public education. The problem with genAI is better expressed through a classic computer science concept, known as SYMBOL GROUNDING. 🧵

As a "problem," symbol grounding arises from the Saussurian insight that there is no inherent meaning in the curved and linear shapes we call letters; the meanings we ascribe to them in their various permutations are a function of social consensus and lived experience. +

9. If you use Al to write something for you, it is meaningless and we'd all be better off if you had never said anything in the first place.

This is the thing: Writing is meaning. The reason we write things is to express some sort of meaning, to pass along important information, to convey a human emotion or sensation. It doesn't matter whether the writing is grammatically correct, or vividly expressed. It matters that it came from you. That is the point of writing. If you ask a Chatbot to write something for you, you are being fundamentally unhuman and foundationally dishonest. I am not going to bend on this one. If it requires an Al bot for you to express something to me, you and I are probably not actually friends.

Designers make exactly the same mistake as the XKCD geologists: they think about their stakeholders as more junior designers. And when they were junior designers, they could tell that their work was bad and the work of pros was good. But managers aren't designers *at all.* They can't tell it's bad.

Tired of being called the pessimist just because you’re the one asking the hard questions in the team? Yeah, same. That’s probably why Andy Budd’s article hit home today. People don’t always get, that, designers aren’t negative. We are cautious. We ask “what if?” to prevent problems.

In any fast-moving product team, there’s a familiar pattern. A confident roadmap is shared. Timelines are tight but “doable.” Enthusiasm is high. Then, just as the meeting is wrapping up, a designer tentatively raises a hand and asks:“Have we thought about what happens if…?”
