90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

On the BBC’s many years of uncritical boosting of Farage/Reform: - the BBC will ultimately lose both number of and vigour in their defenders, who have lost patience with this - Farage would quickly decimate the BBC if it blunderingly helps him into power.

John Cleese has spent 2 days ridiculing Khadija Patel for the crime of wearing traditional Islamic dress. Patel won a genuine award for her youth club work, encouraging participation in sports. His racism and Islamophobia blind him to her achievements. [H/T @pcsoblahdeehell.bsky.social]
A Bolton woman has been honoured by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for helping more girls get into sport.

Khadija Patel, founder of KRIMMZ Girls Youth Club, is one of 53 women from across England and Wales to be recognised with a purple seat at Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

The initiative celebrated women helping to shape the future of cricket at every level.

Khadija Patel

Khadija grew up as one of six sisters in Bolton.

Her love of cricket began through informal family games organised by her father in the open space of his cash and carry.

She went on to found KRIMMZ Girls Youth Club for women and girls from underrepresented communities to take part in sport.

KRIMMZ Girls Youth Club is a community-led organisation based here in Bolton.

The club delivers a wide range of activities designed to promote social inclusion, physical health, emotional wellbeing, and personal development.

While the majority of sessions are girls-only, the club also provides opportunities for boys and children with additional needs to participate.
