OUT NOW! With a raven sitting upon the !

Book cover which features Georgian illustrations of an overflowing tankard of ale, a man on a speeding horse aiming a gun, a tavern, a raven, and two people in a romantic clinch.Exploring detailed accounts of historic crime is one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of a society and its culture decades and centuries later. Of course, stories of crime and deviance are intriguing in their own right; but through understanding the context in which they were committed, how they were made sense of, and how communities and officials responded to them, we can gain incredible insight into life at that time and place.

Uncover the tales of real-life murders, manslaughters, assaults and arson that took place in Georgian Wales and the borders, which together give us a window onto life for ordinary, common people – whose lives would otherwise be lost from the historical record.

From courtship rituals to the value of horses, Georgian attitudes to sex work and insanity, vulnerable adults and fraud, each chapter uses documents from Wales’s Court of Great Sessions to illuminate the past.

Now the weather has begun to cool, autumn is soon around the corner and blackberries are appearing along hedgerows in cities and the countryside alike. Blackberries are some of the easiest (and most delicious) things that can be gathered on walks out in nature.
Autumn

Blackberries are wonderfully unfussy in their growing habits and come September, they appear to burst from every kind of landscape. When our hands were small and our mouths greedy there always seemed to be a wealth of places to go blackberrying – the lanes around grandparents’ houses, parks, fields, gardens – though I quickly learnt that not all berries were equal. From one patch they might be ripe and sweet but from another, hard and terribly sour.

This #NationalYearOfReading, we're asking Calon authors for the books which inspire them, bring them comfort and joy, and those they enjoyed long before they became writers📚️ Discover the beautiful books that Ellie Evelyn Orrell, author of 'Gathering Days' has enjoyed as a reader💚 #ymgolli #goallin
Which books did you read whilst working on your manuscript?

Small Arcs of Larger Circles by Nora Bateson
Things I Don’t Want to Know by Deborah Levy
The Caiplie Caves by Karen Solie
Modern Nature by Derek Jarman

Which book could you read over and over again?

A Horse at Night: On Writing by Amina Cain
A quietly powerful book about the routines and internal conversations of writing. Often find myself returning to lines or passages as reminders of the beauty to be found in process and inspiration.
Do you have a favourite comfort read?

Anything written by Tove Jansson

Stories which glitter with island swims and the wonder of days lived through cold, dark winters and long summers. Something about her writing always feels like home.

Which book would you always recommend or give as a gift?

A Month in Siena by Hisham Matar. A beautiful—both heartbreaking and hopeful—account of the ways in which we might process grief through art.Favourite recent reads

Women Without Men
by Shahrnush Parsipur

Pink Soap
by Anju Gaston

Territory of Light

'Gathering Days: A collection of things foraged and found' by Ellie Evelyn Orrell is out now! 🌿 Along the seasons of a year, 'Gathering Days' recalls the ways in which the act of collecting might offer a sense of purpose in times of uncertainty. Find your copy in your favourite local bookshop 📚️
Book cover which features line drawings of a daffodil, grapes, leaves, a kettle, and a bottle.

Text reads: Out Now!I follow the patterns in ever-widening circles. Gathering dust in the heat of summer. Rainwater in all seasons. Occasional snow, glimpsed in the kernel of a persimmon seed. Bramble, acorn, hawthorn and cherry. Tracing the lines of a landscape and the patterns of a year. Towards a greater appreciation of what was there all along.

Along the seasons of a year, Gathering Days recalls the ways in which the act of collecting might offer a sense of purpose in times of uncertainty. Walks across the fields and coasts of Wales bring encounters with stories from elsewhere – a quiet garden in Kyoto or a lamplit street in Seville.

Woven together, these contemplations of land, self and place form a memoir that celebrates the small yet miraculous moments of everyday life, while asking the question of how we might steady ourselves against a landscape.

Book cover which features a dippy boiled egg in a blue and white striped egg cup on a bright blue background. Text reads 'Out Now!'The story of trying to get life right even when things feels a little bit wrong, ‘How an Egg Changed My Life’ is a tender, funny blend of memoir, cookbook and nostalgic observation on what it takes to feel fulfilled.

From growing up as a gay teenager in the Welsh valleys to trying to find his own space in the city, Mikey Bell builds a life that looks good on paper – but a curious sense of dissatisfaction lingers, which makes even the best achievement feel incomplete. With honesty and wit, Mikey’s story captures the disappointment and struggle of discovering that life rarely unfolds as you expected.

During an existential panic, Mikey takes a trip to Italy, cooking and eating his way toward clarity – and along the way examines identity, expectations, success and what it means to find fulfilment. With reaffirming recipes that turn everyday food into a lens for joy, ‘How an Egg Changed My Life’ reminds us that we can always find a new appetite for life, but only when we learn to define w

'Seascape: Notes from a changing coastline' by @mateoy.bsky.social is now out in paperback! Find a copy in your favourite local bookshop 📚️
Cover of Seascape which features a person stood on a clifftop looking out over a person stood with their arms outstretched in wonder at the seascape.

Text reads: ‘Seascape is a vivid portrait of the Welsh coast as it is today, a fascinating lesson about its many salty pasts, and a clear-eyed assessment of the challenges to come, on the front line of climate change. Matthew Yeomans takes the wide view, and joins the dots, weaving a story that's urgent and informed, but also a good blast of seaside fun.’

This is tomorrow! Should be a fun chat with Alex about his fascinating and very entertaining romp through a century of Welsh literature. So much to chew over, and all in the care of the truly brilliant @montylitfest.bsky.social. Best cakes on the circuit.
